Last weeks visit to our beloved CR, was a great and memorable one, after getting out of SantaMaria airport, my cell started ringing to my surprised I was getting a signal. and its from I.C.E. and when we reach downtown SJ it turn into numbers for the signal...which i still can received call and text messages. my question how much do they charge my provider? We have T-Mobile for our service. My November trip last year, i could not get any signal...is this new? I would love to know what are the rates they will charge me. :?:

Tmobile works in Costa Rica at a rate of $1.99 per minute, thats if you have an international plan. If not, I am not sure how much it is. May want to call Tmobile and ask

GSM and TDMA work down there, so, US providers of those two signals work...

ATT and Tmobile are GSM, sprint USED to have TDMA.

T-Mobile and AT&T (maybe others but definately not Verizon!) tri-band or quad band cellphones will work in CR. (It has to be able to work on the 1800Mhz GSM band.) You need to have international roaming enabled (you usually have to call and ask for this) or have an international roaming plan.

I have AT&T and the roaming rate in CR is about $2.00/min. I could pay $6.00/mo for the international roaming plan and get a rate of $1.60/min. Dialing is easy with AT&T. Just dial the local number. No country code or prefix needed. I also have a T-Mobile UK phone. It works in CR too but it is a PITA to use. I have to call a service number and wait for a call back with dialing instructions. I have to include the country code & area code when dialing. It is a pay-as-you-go plan so that may be the root of the difficulty.

If you have your phone set to roam automatically it will find a local network wherever you are without your intervention. This can be good and bad.

Be careful some plans will charge you roaming & long distance fees when you are getting messages from the States even if your phone is off.

T-Mobile now has a deal where you can make international calls FROM the states at a reduced rate. Other than that you will pay the rate the provider in the country you are visiting charges.

T-mobile charges 1.09 to call CR from the states.

WHEN ROAMING it does not make any difference who your provider is you will be billed based on the rate agreement negotiated by the carrier of the country you are visiting and your cell phone provider !!!

So unless you can get a special rate from your provider when roaming your stuck. And believe me some of the places in the Caribbean charges as much as 6.99 / minute.

you may want to check out this thread ( I hope I got the link correct) or search for "cell phone":

Verizon works fine. You must have a World Phone which is both CDMA/GSM. You can set it for manual or automatic switching and you must have the GSM chip installed on the phone. Mine will even do data services when ICE doesn't stop it for no apparent reason.

Verizon has gotten aggressive with their world roaming capabilities to compete with others. I have taken my phone to I think 6 different countries and have had no problems.
