Quote: U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told senators Tuesday that although much attention was given to Russia's recent courting of some Latin American countries, he is more concerned about new activities of Iran in the region.
Gates told the Senate Armed Services Committee he is worried about efforts by the Iranian government to gain influence in Latin America. "I'm concerned about the level of, frankly, subversive activity the Iranians are carrying on in a number of places in Latin America, particularly South America and Central America," said Gates. "They're opening a lot of offices and a lot of fronts behind which they interfere with what is going on in some of these countries." Anybody seen any Iranians here? Anybody go carpet shopping lately? This would be good news for muff lovers, as I think they prohibit the shaving of pubic hair. My tip off will be when the owners of convenience stores can't speak Spanish. Any other ideas, guys? |

Sorry, I spit my drink out through my nose when I misread the last sentence, thinking it said "They're opening a lot of orifices...." Holy Cow, I'm an Iranian agent and didn't even know it. ![]() |

I think convenience stores come later. Start to worry when the cab drivers can not speak Spanish and can actually find the place you want to go when you tell them the calle and avenida numbers. ![]() ![]() Can't be all bad if it brings back the bush. ![]() |

I think that the Iranians are using South American addresses to circumvent embargos on stainless steel tubing that they buy from China that they need to build nuclear doo-dads using the technonogy that they bought from the Russians. Look out! Venuzuela will likely be our next "Axis of Evil" ! ![]() |

Everywhere in the world that we have pissed on is a breeding ground for our enemies. When we refuse to even talk with a country, we pretty much force them to the other side. When we start using our head instead of our muscle, these places will be our allies. Hopefully, we are approaching a sea change... |

Uhhhh, Noriega of Panama is still in prison. He did his 20 years in prison, but now there is a debate on whether he goes back to Panama to face charges or goes to France, which wants to extradite him. Maybe you mean Ortega of Nicaragua? |

More fear mongering. Remember there is a terrorist hiding in everyone's woodshed. Gotta keep that defense industry pumping. |

Yes you are correct. Thought after I typed in Ortega and I was tired and it was late. I knew it was one of those "gas". Thank you. |

Yes could help to talk to an enemy or negotiate with it but how exactly do you negotiate with a known terrorist state that wants nothing more than the destruction of another country, to wipe it off the map? Is slippery no? But then on the other hand and not having anything to do with religion don't you think it is really about the real estate? Yeah according to their Bible they are returning to their "homeland" but was like a 2000 year gap. And guess what in 2000 years the Arabic peoples moved in. I've been thinking too that even if Iran creates nukes they would be fools to ever launch them on Israel. All that fallout and stuff would phuck up the whole region but then mad men do mad things. |

Brother ID--It's a difference of degree, not of kind. They are OFFICIALLY a theocratic state. And as Brother Jester alluded to, Iranians are not Arabs. If only we hadn't indulged ourselves in Realpolitik by re-installing the Shah...But what's done is done; what happens going forward is the key. |

The only thing that USA could do to satisfy Latin America and the rest of the losers would be to become like them. If USA were to leave the Earth and settle on Mars, Latin America would still help anyone trying to destroy them there. It's not who you are but what you can do. In over 200 years you created the best country in the world, the rest of the world has been out there longer than USA and they just go from bad to worst. Unfortunately, USA is right on the way out. There's a lot of people here creating the conditions for saviors with hidden agendas to take over. I see so much populism around here today that reminds me a lot of the country I left behind. I love USA like my own and I pray that I'm wrong. Time will tell and it won't take too long. |
