Holy cow! So, I would imagine that the La Paz waterfalls are pretty much shut down for tourists. What a shame. It is such a beautiful place. IIRC, many tourists were stranded at the lodge there after the earthquake and were eventually choppered out. Even if the roads were opened, I imagine that the trails are trashed. I think that I recognize that soda too. (But then so many of them look alike.) If it's the one, then it is between La Paz and Sarapiqui. I guess that I am surprised that almost all of the serious damage seems to be from landslides caused by the quake. I live here on the west coast of the US in earthquake country and even with our mountainous terrain we have very few slides caused by quakes. Thanks for posting the link. |

Holy wow! Thanks ID. I wonder if the slides occured instantaneously? And all the areas they took the tourists with all the green handrailing!! Wonder what they are like?? |

I'm a native Californian and clearly a 6.1 earthquake there is an entirely different event than one here. The level of destruction in the last photo reminds me more of the area around Mt. St. Helens after the eruption. Those pictures are incredible. |

I was at Catarata de La Paz this summer with a "newbie" bro on our way to La Fortuna. We stopped at these falls in the photo for the obligatory pics. I remember on the opposite side of the falls there were a few shacks selling snacks and trinkets, clinging on to the side of the road above a deep ravine with the outflow of the waterfall continuing downstream far below them. I just hope no one was inside them when the quake hit. |

It may have been a 6.1 but from the report it was pretty shallow, only 2-3 miles deep. No surprise that those tropical mountainsides came down like that. |

From the La Paz Waterfall Gardens website: "Due to the devastating earthquake on January 8, 2009, the Peace Lodge and La Paz Waterfall Gardens is temporarily closed....Contrary to various news reports, the 500 guests and staff members of Peace Lodge and La Paz Waterfall Gardens were all very fortunate as we had not one fatality. In fact, the worst reported injury was a broken ankle....Unfortunately, there were many lost lives in the surrounding areas and we are finding out about more each hour." |

ID, Amazing pics., thanks for posting and keeping us informed. I really didn't see the earthquake get much play here in the US. Surprising since so many US citizens travel, live or are just interested/fascinated to/in/by CR. Godspeed to the victims and recovery efforts. PURA VIDA! |

Thanks for those pics, Id. They are very descriptive and show the power of nature. I think I might have stopped and had coffee at that Soda. I remember they sold some trinkets and small gift items along with food and drinks. |
