"Tránsito Looking To Hire 400 New Officers

Anyone who wants to or has ever wanted to work in law enforcement now has a chance as the Policía de Tránsito increases its force by 400 officers.

Applications for work as Tránsito (traffic) officials are being taken up to February 5, 2009, at the Dirección de la Policía de Tránsito, located in Plaza González Víquez, on the south side of San Jose.

Aoplicants must be at least 18 years of age, be Costa Rican citizen, have a drivers license, and a high school degree.

Those approved will spend the next five months at the Escuela Nacional de la Policía de Tránsito and will be earning between ¢300.000 ($545.00*) to ¢400.000 ($727.00*) monthly once they are on the job.

For more information contact the MOPT human resources department at 2523 2240.

The expansion of the traffic police force was approved by legislators in the new Ley de Tránsito that went into effect on December 23, 2008.

Currently the Policía de Tránsito force is made up of 800 officers that patrol the highways of the entire country"

* I converted colones to dollars at current exchange rate.

Much higher pay structure then has been previously reported. Add in the little "extra" you can earn helping out motorists and it is not a bad living based on Tico standards.

I was disappointed when I read your foot note regarding the salary. I was expecting to read something like this:

* Salaries are base salaries and do not include any bribes, stolen goods and cash or extored cash or "services" which officers may or may not be able to squeeze from the public."

Such a note might improve their recruiting efforts. :?

I approached the subject just a tad more diplomatically,

Transitos are the biggest scumbags in the country... When I first read the article I hoped they would be hiring more real cops (ie. the Fuerza and OIJ). The last thing this country needs is more phucking transitos.

Maybe it's just me. I have lived here for 26 years and have never really had any problems with transitos. I've been pulled over tons of times over the years. Most of the time they had every right to pull me over. And most of the time I got out of it without a ticket. I do speak spanish, and I am always very polite. The few times I have received a ticket, I just pay the damn things and go on my way. Prior to the new laws, it didn't amount to much anyway. As for any looking for a bribe, I just told them "haga me la parte". That ended that. But that is just me.

While my experience is far more limited than that of Tuanis I agree with what he has said. In my 5+ years of living here I have only had one incident with the transitos. They clocked me speeding, which I was, and stopped me. He was polite and professional. Unlike some gringos I have never been stopped because I was a gringo and they were looking for a payoff. YMMV
