Hey, I am a native Californian. I have lived with and through some big one's.

BUT, a few minutes ago San Jose was ROCKED. My casa was shaking so much and for so long that I am a little dizzy We are getting aftershocks as I type this...makes me a little homesick :(

Can't wait to see how large this one will measure

and just this morning in the Tico Times:

San José feels first jiggle of the year
By Alex Leff

Costa Rica's Central Valley experienced a jolt yesterday morning from a quake that registered a magnitude of 4.0, the first noticeable one of 2009.

Seismologist Víctor González said the tremor started at 10 a.m. and lasted about 3 minutes, but many residents may have only felt it for a few seconds, depending on how close they were to its epicenter.

The quake began 5 kilometers east of the Poás Volcano, 6 km underground, said González, of the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica. He said there were 55 aftershocks.

No injuries or damage were reported.

Yesterday's quake may have been the first to noticeably shake us this year, but seismic activity has already been stirring quietly, with as many as 10 mini-earthquakes a day, González said.

Last year ended with at least 4,746 quakes, but only about 60 of them were felt, the strongest hitting 6.2 on Nov. 19, the observatory reported.

We were shaking big time in Escazu about 15 minutes ago. Yesterday was small. Today was huge.

Pictures flew off my wall. My neighbors water pipes broke. People are out on the street waiting. I'm stupidly in my office... working on my computer.

When someone finds out the score, please post? I'd bet it was a 6 or higher.

Apparently, this quake makes yesterday's 4.0 seem like nada. Preliminary news reports say this one registered as 6.2 and originated 24 miles NW of SJ (roughly the same area as yesterday).

Word on the street is that it was centered around Guapiles and felt as far away as Liberia. 6.1 is preliminary report.

UPDATE :

I just received a phone call from our infamous member Spanky, over in LOS. He was in the middle of a session with his favorita lady-boy, and he told me that the session was so wild, that he could swear he made the earth move.

Coincidence ?!?!??!  :P

Ok. I couldn't help it. Hope all the brothers in CR weren't affected by this latest quake. I'm sure it'll be all over the local papers tomorrow. I'll call my business partner in Flamingo to see if they felt it in that area.

MG

The PRELIMINARY report WAS 6.2 and 24 miles NW of SJ. The UPDATE changed that to 6.1 and 20 miles NNW of the capital (not Guapiles). I imagine the dust hasn't settled on this yet and the exact numbers will need to be worked out.

Post subject:  Sixth floor

Sixth floor:

suddenly it ain't so good to be on the sixth floor. Luckily I was at the DelMar having lunch. I've been here before when the buildings would move. It would be a rocking back and forth motion for a few seconds. This time it was up and down the DelMar rattled. Headed for the door to see people streaming out of the DelRey. Got a couple snapshots of that.

The elevators are out power is still on its business as normal down in the main lobby. I walked upstairs to check my room and send this. In the room the lamps were in the floor my ice bucket is in the floor. It must've really been moving up here. Being a coward I'm going back to the lobby. More later.

USGS gives the location as 10.213°N, 84.248°W which is right near Volcano Poas and very close to the one that occurred yesterday. Just got the 2nd aftershock.
