Location: Yardley PA
Leaving for San Jose tonight and wanted to know about the denomations of bills to bring down. I have heard that there is a problem of cashing $100 bills. Has any one incountered any difficiulity? What would one advise. Thanks.

C notes are not good to bring Due to counterfiting
I do not bring them I do not care to find out in person that they are not accepted

That is exactly the right denomination to use, if you ask most providers.
They won't even bother you with change. :x

I recommend $10's and 20's.
Most banks, hotel desks and casinos will change $100's for you, but who needs the hassle?

Billiam the only problem was with bills starting with CB serial #s. Bring all the other 100s you want as long as they are good condition- untorn and unmarked.

I would bring $20's and maybe some $50's, but those can be a problem too. This past trip I saw a board in some hotel (SL I think) that $50 with serial number starting with "AB" are not accepted.

Hundreds are fine, especially if you plan to change them for colones at the bank. You won't find many places other than hotels, casinos, and banks that will take them though.

Remember, you have to bring your original passport with you to the bank to change money. You can change money at the HDR without a passport, but they won't give you top rate (though it's not bad really).

It is very difficult to exchange any $100 bill with a serial number beginning with CB. Many of the private banks will reject them outright. As mentioned above, counterfeiting is the reason.

You are also better to obtain bill without any marks or tear (rips). The newer and crisper the better.

Some of the guys will differ with me; however, I take nothing over $20 when travelling abroad. I take $1,000 when visiting most places, and take $75 to $100 in dollar bills for tips. Also, I know where I am when I get to the $1s.

Yeah...you're right Greengo. I had a bank teller inside the INS building rip me off for 10 mil one time.
