I'll ask any Windows tech-heads here first before trying other options. I have a laptop (A Dell Latitude D600 with XP Pro, it's a refurb I got for my brother) that connects to wireless networks, but IE won't load anything. It had been working fine for months with an unsecured network (not my own) that I had been using, but one day IE gave the "Cannot display this webpage" message. Figuring that it got blocked from access, I finally got around to buying a router and setting up my own network. Well, my own laptop and my previous one work just fine with my network, but the Dell still won't load webpages, even though it's connected to the network. I used the command prompt to ping the router, and it says the connection is fine, so I have no idea what is going on.

See if you can ping yahoo or google from the command prompt. If you can then you are seeing the internet. If you can't then you don't have an internet connection. If you can, odds are you got a sweet little malware/virus on your system that you need to get cleaned up.

Though I Defer to others who know more than I...

1. DELL SUCKS they and AOL should get together and go out of business.

2. Probably not dell that is causing the issue.. Try Uninstalling your wireless network adaptor and reinstalling it than re-aquiring the IP Address.. In XP Pro it should give you that option when trying to connect.

3. Check your firewall settings to make sure you don't have both Windows along with any other virus protection software causing a conflict. Only one is needed.

4. Launch Firefox and see if you can access the web if you can than its an IE setting big phucking surprise...... IE did a major update Wed night and I had to phuck with my setting afterwards everything was screwed up.

If you don't have firefox connect a hard line to it and download it than try the wireless connection.

Checked the wired connection, I forgot that it doesn't work either. Same situation, shows up as being connected, diagnostics run fine, pages don't load. The Dell doesn't have Firefox on it.

Spanky, how do you ping Yahoo or other site?

Might have to bring it in for checkout and repair, just trying to see if that can be avoided.

Start, Run, type CMD and hit enter. Will open a DOS window type

ping yahoo.com and see if you got a response. If you get Request Timed Out you aren't seeing the internet.

Did it, checked out ok, 4 packets sent, 4 packets received. But yet IE won't load anything.

You have a malware infection then. You are going to need a working browser to download this stuff. If you have Firefox already then you are good to go.

Download Spybot Search and Destroy and run it on your PC

Update your virus software as well and run that after you have done Spybot. If you don't have virus software download AVG.

You may also want to download Firefox as well.

The two programs Spybot and AVG should fix your IE. After that patch your system with the latest Microsoft updates. Keep patching until it tells you there are no critical updates.

Spanky, thanks for the help. It worked...and didn't. SpyBot SnD found a bunch of stuff, I removed all of it...and IE still didn't work. I then downloaded Firefox on my desktop and used a flash drive to install it on the Dell, and THAT works just fine. I guess IE got phucked big time, and this computer was a refurb and don't have the Windows disk. Can't get Windows Update to work, since it insists on opening IE, so no go.

Spanky - Maybe it's a blown data storage array ???!?!!? (sorry, couldn't help it )!!!

Check the proxy settings of IE.. perhaps the previous owner setup a proxy.

Under Tools->Internet Options->Connections Tab->Lan Settings->Under Proxy servers make sure to uncheck th box if it's checked.

DAMN IT! Yes you are right. Had a string of those as well for some reason.

It wasn't checked. I knew that wasn't the problem, as it had been working fine. I think my brother got something from a website, he had mentioned Emusic, and Spybot SnD reported finding a spyware called "Emusic-A". It's supposedly gone now, but IE still doesn't work, again as it starts up but doesn't load any pages. Anyways, Firefox is working fine, so I might just leave it at that unless there is still some risk involved.

HT I'm no geek but maybe you have corrupt files,run Chkdsk to find and repair them.

Now you have fire fox working you know you browser corruption with IE..

SO go to control panel and remove programs and remove the IE Browser than re-download the newest version or since firefox is working I would STAY WITH IT but try IE 8 Beta you still have fox and IE 8 Beta is pretty nice.
