New Jersey family of 7 picked as 2 millionth tourist
BY AM Costa Rica with heavy edits from DiegoC

The family of Mark and Gretchen Biedron were picked as the two-millionth tourists to visit Costa Rica. The selection of the “tree hugging” family of seven convenetly matches the mythological eco-friendly Gringo tourist which the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT) claims to be targeting. Bring green money; leave the green leaves.

The Biedron’s “operate the environmentally sound Willow School in Gladstone, New Jersey. They have been written up in newspapers and magazines there for the way the school was constructed.”

Cognizant of its specious selection process, ICT took pains ensure the public knows that the selection data were also conveniently, and one might add, beneficially validated by the Escuela de Estadísticas of the Universidad de Costa Rica giving yet another meaning to the phrase figures lie and liars figure.

How horrid would the selection have been, had the two-millionth tourist been an beer bellied, sports watching, chica slobbering, white haired, aloha shirt wearing, horny Gringo complete with white tennis and a San José map which he downloaded from CRT, directing him to all the monger-friendly sights.

Who said there is no Santa Claus, no Tooth Fairy or Easter Bunny? Don’t you just love economic based political correctness!

The epidemic of political correctness only seems to get worse with time. Good post.

Spanky,

You, and only you, would have said something like that. You should have your DNA checked to see whether your X chromosomes outnumber your Y's.

I don´t suppose then, that they took their picture next to one of the rivers flowing with raw sewage and choked with plastic bags either.

For a prize, the "winners" should be flown to Jaco or Tamarindo and be forced to swim in the shit infested water. Can you say refreshing...

In line with Brother Orange's post--As part of the Grand Prize, the entire Biedron family was treated to the Hep A vaccine series for their next visit, assuming they survive this one.

LOL! and to think Mike321 called me a "CR basher"
Quote:
Carlos Ricardo Benavides, tourism minister, said the family represented the type of tourist the country was looking for, a person interested in the environment and seeking an authentic experience in Costa Rica. That was a way of rejecting the booming sex tourism business without really mentioning it.
WTF, everytime I blow a load in CR it is an authentic experience. Yeah what a joke they were "picked" as the 2 millionth  Hopefully the prize includes bodyguards so the green family doesn't get robbed, stabbed or shot while enjoying their family vacation.

There is some controversy about the actual numbers used to count so-called tourists. They apparently use figures from immigration, and count the number of people who enter the country, for whatever reasons. From AM Costa Rica:

Quote:
Arrival numbers always are delayed at the tourism institute. The figures come from the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería based on the visa slips visitors present when they enter the country.

In addition, hundreds of thousands of supposed visitors, mainly from other Central American countries, arrive as tourists, but some have the goal of seeking work, and most are not likely to be lodged in a hotel.

It's not surprising that they 'fixed' this event. It's PR, after all. Nevermind the beer-bellied monger in his Hawaiian shirt, how about a Colombian pimp/drug dealer and his ho as the 2 millionth?

Just imagine how awesome it would be if they picked a slightly pudgy, balding, single male around 42ish. That would have been the best person ever to get picked.

I am shocked, absolutely SHOCKED you guys don’t believe the government’s story that tree huggers were in fact the 2 millionth visitors. And to doubt the veracity of the University of Costa Rica’s Statistical Department is even more astounding.

The chicas are very environmentally conscious. They sell it, and then reuse it. No waste!
