AN Costa Rica Monday December 1, 2008 Barber to expats, Roy Black, dies while in hospital By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Roy Black Vasqez, who worked for more than 60 years as a barber, has died. The news came from a traditional advertisement placed in La Nación Sunday by Hotel Dunn Inn. The ad contained little information execpt that the hotel regretted profoundly the death of its beloved barber. Black was 75 in September when he told a reporter he was facing a heart bypass operation. His barber shop was frequented by many expats in the Dunn Inn parking lot off Avenida 11. Black noted at that time the operation was risky, and he said he doubted that he would live until he was 100 as many customers suggested. A clerk at the hotel Sunday said that she undrstood that Black died Thursday in a hospital, but she had no other information. In Costa Rica obituaries seldom appear in newspapers unless the individual is famous. Instead, companies and friends publish display ads expressing their sorrow. |

Sorry to learn of this. Never met the man, but passed his shop many times, and knew some gringos who had him cut their hair. My condolences to his family. Zebra |

RIP Mr. Black A good honest man that provided a quality service and combined with his ability to tell a few stories from the days of yesteryear, I will miss him. |
