Ok, I'm being cranky today, but will reiterate this point again. Unless you are in the gulch, kick the girl to the curb in the morning. I have seen multiple violations of this in Jaco today..... Ok in puta areas, but folks in regular restaurants are just laughing at ya. Not an opinion, seeing it right now. Saw at breakfast a gringo grandpa with his girly being very obvious... Now,am overhearing a gringo, with his puta, telling some other wide eyed gringos about his 10 years down here and he speaks maybe infant level Spanish..... Keep the girls in certain areas and don't annoy everyone around. Sorry, grumpy today.

Always a silver lining. Plus watching some old gringo stumble over Spanish while regaling all of the other expats that he's lived there for 10 years is just the best time ever. :D

Crankily expressed or not, the undercurrent of Brother Thirdworld's post is spot on. Individually I can stand a lot of ridicule but as a group of "hobbyists" do we need any more exposure to the eco-tourist OR Tico community loathing or enmity? A little thought, a little self-control goes a long way. That in-your-face stuff even if unconsciously expressed can rouse folks even further against us. I don't stand holding a metal rod in thunder storms either...Over-reacting maybe, but the Prez was aided in their decision to make it difficult to stay there.

Then again, who gives a Phuck what others may think. Phuck the eco-tourists if they don't like it! But the Ticos err, it's their country. What I think is funny is that dude who has been here or visiting for 10 years can't speak Spanish yet..LOL

I'm very sensitive to the issue that Thirdworld raises, so I read his post and the others with interest.

I've been spending time with the same girl for over two years. We've traveled quite a bit out of the gulch. She is a prostitute, I pay her to spend time with me, and I am acutely aware of this. Thus, I have expected the sort of reaction Thirdworld describes. However, and surprisingly, I've never observed a negative reaction from the people around me, although I've seen a few 'knowing looks.' I must add, however, when dining, we both act dignified, we speak only in Spanish, and I treat her and the wait staff (or whomever) with respect.

Perhaps there are people mocking or laughing at me when I go out with my favorita. I do care what people think. But then again, I don't treat my favorita like a 'puta' or 'ho,' so perhaps people don't carry an immediate animus towards me or feel the need to deride me.

Truthfully, the only time I've felt embarrassed while out dining is when I'm joined by oafish and crude fellow mongers (a rare occurrence with the gentlemen I've met on CRT). Further, the mindset by some men that the girls should be kicked to the curb before breakfast, an attitude which, I might add, generally extends far past that particular scenario, embarrasses me far more than being seen with a girl half my age. This is, of course, just my own opinion.

I would like to take a few favorite chicas to dinner, breakfast, etc., but it seems it is usually they who are reluctant to go, possibly afraid to be seen with a gringo, by someone from their neighborhood, thus revealing them as a puta.

I once took a favorite Nica chica and her daughter to the zoo, behind JR's Ribs. We ate in the little cafe located just inside the zoo complex. The people working there were extremely friendly with us, however, I could tell they were trying to figure out "just what the deal was." They prabably don't get too many gringos in there accompanied by a Nica and her daughter.

And some people can pull it off. I've seen many older men with young chicas that wear it much better than others..

I think some of you are still missing the point. This is NOT an issue of whether anyone would be laughing at you (or looking at you jealously in your mind). It also is NOT an issue of whether anyone says anything to you directly or has any other visible reaction. It IS an issue of whether they notice you at all AND whether THEY share your completely positive attitudes about such activities. I agree that some guys can "pull it off" better than others, but it is still like passing for a tico on the street. You can DRESS like a tico all you want, but you'll still LOOK like a gringo. All you can do is make yourself LESS noticable. OTOH, that might work out to be good enough.

Also it is NOT an issue of whether gringo eco-tourist types or ticos notice. If it was JUST the tico management and staff that was noticing the old-gringo/young-chica traffic at the Prez then they'd probably still be happily taking our money. When gringo tourists of all types who don't share our program, particularly the gringas, notice mixed couples they sometimes complain to the management, as they did at the Prez, and that makes the management care and sometimes take action against. Even if it is out on the street or somewhere else, it feeds into a gringo impression of CR as a country with a sex-tourism "problem" and MOST ticos do NOT like their country having that sort of reputation. And when the ticos notice, even if its an envious guy, it can still be a negative thing as it feeds into a general resentment of gringos who are buying up their country and making it less affordable for the natives, not just their land but even their women. Also I think that, although older ticos with younger chicas may be accepted, when it is a foreign gringo with one of their daughters it can be seen as a corruption of their society.

And finally, because it doesn't matter whether you THINK everyone else are just envious or amused or whether they are ticos or gringos, any situation where you draw unneccessary attention to the "hobby" can have a negative impact for all of us. It is NOT a situation where you should just shrug it off because YOU don't care what others think. You SHOULD care. Nor should you just react with LAUGHTER at others reactions because when their reactions ripple back to such things as barring mixed couples at places like the Prez or immigration sweeps/rousting at the BM or shutting down of your favorite MP's then things will not seem so funny.

So, in sum, I wouldn't go so far as saying kick your novia to the curb before breakfast but exercise as much discretion as possible when out in public so as not to call undue attention to yourselves (e.g. definitely no PDA's). Rightly or wrongly so, we live in a world where most people do not look so favorably on what we do as we do and heightening outside awareness of the "problem" can have undesirable consequences for all of us.

Exactly right I am polite and respectful to everyone in the the hotels and restaurants that I stay or eat in. I tip good and I am usually warmly received at the restaurants and hotels I eat or stay in. Anybody who doesn't like it can phuck off.

Contrary to the tone of some of the other post I have never really had a problem with the age differences. I really don't give a rat ass about what anybody in CR thinks.

Prolijo, nothing personal, but you tend to over analyze some things. If Prez doesn't want us then phuck them too! I stay there & I like it there but if they dont want me and my $$$ ,approximately 4-5 times a year, then I will take it elsewhere. No big deal. The Prez might miss us when they have 30 empty rooms on a weekend night in the middle of the summer during a friggin recession. They will certainly miss the guys who hang at the rail and eat and drink on a daily basis. $$$ talks....

And that is ok as most keep their activities in the gulch. Jaco is a different story. Also, when I report something like this, I am not talking about just an older guy quietly having a meal with a much younger chica... I am talking about loud, obnoxious, look at me with my younger chica type behavior. I don't say a word about a situation where all parties are behaving like normal people... And she should have restaurant manners if going out in this type of setting. To sum up, the events I am reporting are of bad behavior and not just knocking someone for being out with a younger chica.
