Guys who know me know that it is a rare occasion that I am at the DR after 9:30-10pm. Well, last night I decided to act really grownup and stay out late, have a few glasses of wine, and avail myself of some of the lovely creatures that I don't see earlier in the day. Around 10:30 in walks 3 chicas that would be ranked as between 81/2 and 9 1/2 on any monger's scale.They were dressed in slinky,sexy black dresses and caught everyone's eyes as they took a round table on the Monkey Bar side. It was like they had "EXPENSIVE" tatooed on their forheads. I sipped my wine as I watched several young studs put their best moves on,hoping to impress them. After an hour of this I realised that each was scared away by what must have been Manhatton pricing.Being the cheap prick I am about pu*sy, I didn't approach them.

Then about midnight I spot a really attractive chica sitting on my favorite sofa in the lobby. I sit next to her and start to chat. I invite her to have a drink at the bar with me. Of course she accepts...kaching...kaching. She tells me that she is a fulltime aerobic instructor from Cartago. (and her body will back that up) When she tells me that she comes to the DR occasionally in "her car" I get an inkling that I am out of my price range. Her name is Pamela and she speaks perfect English which comes in handy when we discuss price so that there if no misunderstanding. I ask and she says $200 plus taxi back to the DR. I almost spit my mouthful of wine on the bar. I didn't know where to start so I asked why she needed taxi money if she had a car.Well she would prefer to leave her car there. I then used my debonair, negotiating skills which have been carefully honed over the years to get the cost down to the unacceptable level of $150 PLUS TAXI. She asks what I usually pay,and I give her my high-end best shot right away....30,000 colones and possibly a propina if it's really good. Well now she almost spits her vodka and Redbull on the bar. I continue the conversation at this point ONLY because I am already fully invested with the price of her drink. I suavely counter with the most I have ever offered. Proudly I say "OK, 40,000 colones," as much as I have ever offered, and almost spitting of the Redbull she repeats $150. I wish her the best of luck and get up from my seat and wander off into the night to get a taxi home ALONE. I think I'll stick to my routine of late afternoon and early evening for new chicas to explore. This latenight stuff is too expensive for we retirees.

I'm wondering if that was the lowest she'd go whether you weren't the only one who left alone that night. OTOH, for every expensive overpriced chica there is some foolish gringo with more money than sense that is willing to pay her price and perhaps they found each other that night. The sad thing is that as beautiful and hot looking as she was (and probably very limber from the aerobics), with an attitude like hers, she probably wouldn't measure up nearly as well in terms of uninhibited GFE quality service.

Hey VB. After you left, I got her todo la noche for 20 mil, and all she stole was my mouthwash.....NOT. Actually you were scaring the poop out of me that you were beginning to lower your standards and up-ing your offer. Another man, with your luck, would have quickly gone to the tables, won some house money and paid the higher price. Thanks for reaffirming my faith in you by sticking to your guns.....and your values; as low as they might be. In town Dec 10-26...see you for those 2 rounds that you promised.

The drink cost more than the chica!!!

There are certain drinks that ought to get a chica dismissed immediately. Because they are greedy little sluts just trying to spend money... Anything with redbull, bailey's, shots of patron,,, what else? I know I'm missing a few of them... you know the kind of chicas I'm talking about...

If they ask me if I'd buy them a drink (or, more rarely, if I ask them if they'd like a drink), I always follow that up by asking them what drink they'd like to have. And if it is something outrageously priced, I might counter by suggesting something else more reasonable but that is as far as the discussion goes. One thing that I've learned NOT to do is wait until after the waitress has been called over and is taking our orders to find out what drink the chica has in mind. It becomes a lot trickier to back off if you don't find that out until after the waitress has scribbled down what the chica just surprised you with and she has run off to fill it.

Not about drink prices:

The price of a drink is not to the subject our leading resident guru was commenting on. It's the phenomenon of high in late-night girls appearing at the Del Ray. This is something I noticed in my decade plus of visiting their. My humble opinion ( yes another one of my theories ) is they are high in club girls who did not get a date that night or escort girls in the same situation. On more than one occasion I've taken one of them on an elevator ride and have seldom regretted it. Starting January 3 I will be on an extended stay just about living at the Del Rey and we'll give you a detailed reports on this phenomenon.

Yikes !!! With the economy tanking you would hope that prices, even for the exceptional chicas, would reflect that. The best I have ever done at the DR was early to mid morning and a very sweet 9 Columbiana for $80. Afterwards we had lunch together and she was appreciative of that and did not order anything that expensive. Unfortunately I have had a few good experiences out of the DR since then, but nothing to compare to that.

The place was packed tonight, with the usual female suspects and lots of faces I didn't recall (though unlike some, I DO forget a face relatively often). I don't think we'll see any downturn until a few months from now, when guys who booked their flights in advance begin to stop coming. Weeknights seem to be slow, but weekends are jammed. I credit/blame the cheap flights from Florida. If one or two of the low cost carriers goes belly up, the reduced competition might raise fares.

It seems rational to think that fewer customers = less demand and with supply going nowhere but up, prices should come down. But anybody who wants to talk about rational should stay away from the Del Rey.

Last year I took two flights from The Dakotas to SJO via DEN the cost for a round-trip was $339 one time and $331 the second time. Now the same flight is around $750 to $1,000 depending on departure dates. Fuel prices did go up since the first two flights, but now they are back down to their previous level or lower. Cost of flights, in the present economic environment should come down, if all our esteemed world leaders don't set off a world wide inflation in trying to spend us out of this downturn that we spent ourselves into
