San jOse (Writing). During past October a total of 97 people died in violent form, in all the country, in agreement with registries of the Red Cross.

The majority of the deceases, according to official information, happened as a result of traffic accidents and murders.

In addition, the person who renders first aids transferred to different hospitals from 109 people, that is to say, six patients per day, the majority by upsettings and shocks followed of injured by aggressions with firearms.

According to the Red Cross, the majority of the deaths was registered in San jOse; with 34 cases, Puntarenas; with 16 deceases and Heredia with 12 mortal victims.

In which she goes of the year, 925 people in violent circumstances, the majority by traffic accidents have died, today confirmed the Press office of the Red Cross.

When the major media outlet cannot take the time to separate murder deaths from traffic accident deaths, it may be time to reevaluate priorties/attitudes. IMHO, the following glaringly demonstrates systemic problems in our society. "Should a society view deaths' from traffic accidents.... vs....... cold blooded murder....... as entirely differant........... or....igual?" BTW, I know I am pissing up a rope, expecting anyone to care. Error human es!

For whatever reason, they have elected to categorize "Death by Violence". Under that broad heading, dead by violence is dead by violence. I would be much more willing to tilt at this windmill if I felt that a different categorization would reduce the total. Alas....

I take your over-arching point but not all death by non-accident or even all by firearms is murder. I'd have to know their classification schemes. For example, is self-defense "murder"?---though it is certainly homicide. Do they have degrees of murder here (1st, 2nd, etc)? Also maybe some percentage of MV "accidents" are disguised homicides that are murders. Just no way to tell from the info given, just that 2/1000 of the population died in a given year from these misadventures. By the way, how many workers died from inadequate scaffolding or poorly shored-up trenches collapsing or inadequate pesticide protection? Shouldn't these be classified as at least "industrial murder"?

I think what they try to measure are acts of violent death regardless of the source of the proximate cause. The way that some people drive in Costa Rica is, in many respects, criminal in nature. If the outcome of their poor driving is the proximate cause of death for numerous otherwise innocent people then it should be criminal. If one is killed by the carelessness of handling a firearm or if one is killed by the carelessness of dangerous driving the deceased is still deceased - at the hands of another. The argument is whether or not passing on a curve in a blinding rainstorm on the wrong side of the street constitutes an act of deliberate intent to injure or kill another or should it be categorized as simply advanced stupidity which is often couched as an accident. If the action is criminal then it should be listed in the criminal column.
