I know it's a quiet small town but is there any action to be had in Atenas?

There is action to be had in any town in CR. That does not mean a gringo, be he tourist or resident, is going to be able to find it on his own.

You have to speak enough Spanish to get friendly with the local Ticos. If after a couple of months they decide you are an okay guy they MIGHT introduce you around.

The working women of Atenas travel to San Jose for the big bucks.

There is one bar, right off the Plaza, called the Esquina Caliente - but that is a joke. It is a drinking mans bar, popular with Ticos and Gringos both. But you could hang there for a month and not see an available woman. But that said, when there is an event in town ALL three or four of the part timers will be there.

Speak Spanish, make friends, go to coffee or lunch, see if there is chemistry and there will be no acting and genuine passion. These are women who like to shown attention and who genuinely like Gringo men, older ones too. They are un or under employed and expect a regalito, but do not consider themselves putas - and in fact are not except in the most technical and definitial way.

Enjoy Atenas.
