What is the rule for getting a yellow fever shot when coming from US into Costa Rica even though you have Colombia in your passport from a previous trip a month before. I saw some warnings a year ago, but havent seen anything since. Is there no need as long as you are entering CR through the US? I searched the subject but it seems unclear if you are coming via US.
In addition if you get a new passport I guess that eliminates the need for the shot. IM really not interested in getting that shot as it can put you down for two weks in some cases, paying 100 bucks for a new passport is worth the money to me.

Hunter,

I wouldn't sweat it. You only need to show proof of the vaccine if your flight originated in Colombia...not the US. BTW, the shot set me back $200 last December. I was asked for the certificate at SJO when I made trips back from Colombia, but not when I arrived from the US last July.

For future reference, the shot is free in Colombia before your return

Go to your local health Dept. It may save you some big bucks on the shot but then you will have to wait 15 min.+ for the urban girl with major attitude to even acknowledge you would like to pay for it. I was so phuckin frustrate I just walked out and then sure enough the next week they called asking for their payment which I did make.

I just got back from Peru, and supposedly it was required to get back to CR from Peru. I went to a clinic in Lima and it cost me something like 20 dollars, I think. I got my cute little international vaccination certificate, which I tried to show to the immigration person in CR as I re-entered and she just waived it away. Conclusion? Beats me.

Yeah, I know...I paid the $200 at a travel medicine clinic in NJ before I the States. I found out about the free (or nearly free) vaccines after I arrived in Colombia. I believe CR requires innoculation NLT 5 days before entry into the country.

Of course, free will always be the best deal but Jester is right about going to the local health department to save bucks BTW, the folks at the IMMUNIZATION clinic here in Tampa don't have any attitudes unless you count being very friendly. The place where one goes for the free STD checks is another story. The yellow fever shot at the county clinic is not completely free but at $84 is still considerably less than the $200 BD paid at that private clinic. I would never go to one of those expensive private travel clinics for anything.

Are there any other countries that you have to get the shot before entering CR?

Last May I flew US to Medellin. At the end of the trip, I decided to come back thru SJO for a few days.
When I was checking in Avianca, they asked for my yellow fever vaccine certificate...didn't know I needed one. Was not allowed to leave to SJO.
I believe I understood them to say that since I was in Medellin for less than 10 days, I need the vacc in order to go to SJO.

I hear that Panama is now a yellow fever transmission country, and you'll need the same proof of vaccine as when travelling from Colombia.
