Has anyone had LASIK surgery to correct nearsightedness? Having worn glasses for about 35 years, I like the thought of no more glasses. Is the surgery safe now? About 10 years ago, I used to hear horror stories from individuals whose vision was destroyed by the surgery. I imagine it's much safer now(?). If you have had the surgery, were there any resulting problems, such as blurred vision or 'cloudiness', peripheral vision issues, headaches, etc? How much is the surgery now? Funny thing, I don't recall ever seeing any advertisements in the Tico Times (or elsewhere in CR) for the procedure. One last question...is the surgery as effective for someone in their fifties as someone in their twenties or thirties? Thanks in advance! |

I'm interested in it as well, but am honestly terrified of the idea... Every year I say "maybe I'll wait another year and see how things go". My buddy got it done about 3-4 years ago here in CR and hasn't had a problem. I don't know where he did it but it was pretty inexpensive at the time. |

I've had half a dozen friends get LASIK done. None of them had any major problems. Two had minor problems. One was left with poor night vision (halo's around lights) and the other's vision improved, but wasn't corrected to 20/20. I too am terrified with anyone phucking with my eyes unless it was to prevent total blindness. I'm sorry to my good buddy El C, but i'd go insane if I was rendered blind. It would be worse than losing my penis in my mind. |

Haven't had it but met a couple gringo eye Dr.s recently in my travels- one assured me I wasn't too old as many in their 40s and 50s now get it and recent advancements in what they can do have been phenomenal. I got my 1st pair of bifocals and bifocal contacts worked fine for a year and another gringo Dr. I partied with in CR sent me some contacts with one eye adjusted near and the other far (monovision). I can now see better than ever with contacts and they could surgically adjust my eyes to match the contacts, one focused near and one far. The computer maps your eyeball and the actual surgery takes about 20 seconds. It scares me too and I'm not sure I would feel confident to get it done in CR... also not sure what happens if your eyes continue to change, do you get another surgery to adjust? PS he also stated age related macular degeneration is pretty much totally preventable now by taking LUTEIN, it's in multi-vitamins like Centrum. Had it done. Is great. An associate of mine who is in his late '50's just had it done. Loves it. Eyes can get dry (especially on long flights) but eye drops cure that and sight returns. I can't tell you how much I enjoy not fumbling for glasses in the morning or having problems with my contacts. Many different outfits perform the surgery and price varies accordingly. In South Florida we have the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, with locations from Miami-Palm Beach. THe consulatation is gratus. US News rated it #1 "hosptial" for eyes. $4500 Lasik for both eyes. Most expensive price I have seen, but not skimping when it comes to my eyes. And I like the fact it is associated with the UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI! |

I had it done in 2001 - amazing took 5 min and I could pass the drivers eye test before I left. Your eyes are a little dry for several months but you just add drops. Three weeks after my eyes were done I could see 20/20. In the 7 years since then there has been no change still perfect. Everyone is different but the procedure seemed like nothing to me. I think they have it down. I wouldn't hesitate if I were you. The only downside is the $$$. |

I had it done at the age of 49 or 50. It took a day or two for most of the haze to go away. It has gotten better over time and my distance vision is great even in the dark. It was painless and quick. One thing, though, is that it does NOT cure need for reading glasses. As you age, your ability to read things up close almost always gets worse, as the close-up lens in the eye starts to harden. I wear glasses to read and use the computer. But they are one dollar glasses from Dollar Tree, and they work fine. |

It's good to hear from those whose surgery was sucessful but I'd still not risk it, especially from one of those new companies that have sprouted up exclusively to hawk it. There are still plenty of stories out there regarding the after effects such as * dry eyes * ghosting * halos * starbursts * limited night vision * additional corrective lasik * corneal replacements Recently there was an appeal before the FDA to ban Lasik lasers. And tell me why so many opthalmologists still wear glasses? Still, it is usually sucessful and the air force has approved it for pilots - with the caveat that you might end up grounded if there are complications. If you are going to go ahead with it, research the procedure as I did and find a reputable surgeon with plenty of experience in Lasik. |

Go to this site, tons of info.: www.mleye.com. I had it done in the US and swear I would do it again. I was very anxious at first and almost backed out. I paid US prices and still would have it done only here. Sure you can find good clinics south of the border but just too big a risk esp. when dealing with the eyes. Now they can phuck it up bad in the US also. The key is to choose a clinic that specializes in it and does many of them. Any optometrist can get the training and equipment to do it and they usually charge a lot less but also heard of more problems with them versus the big eye centers. Dr. Lessner has been doing these awhile and has done a lot for the South Florida sports teams. |

I have wanted to get it for a long time also but the fact hat you may have to wear reading glasses later on in life and a few horror stories have made me change my mind. Good luck too anyone going through with it. I agree wholeheartedly worth having it doing in The US. SOme things are just too valuable to skimp on. et deals on hotels, airfare, chicas, but your eyes? Pay for the best. PUTA VIDA! |

Just a warning to the married guys, you won't be able to take off your glasses anymore to avoid what the wife looks like. And pay attention to what Bilko said, you can also see in the dark so turning off the lights won't help either. I had it done 10 years ago and immediately afterward, I noticed that my ex gf's ass wasn't as smooth as I thought it was. After you get it done, I guess you could put your glasses on when you are around your wife... don't tell her you got your eyes fixed. |

I had it done about 10 years ago and it was the best money I ever spent! My vision is still about 20/20 after all that time. For those who are waiting for the technology to improve, forget it and just do it. It is a well establiched procedure if you pick a top specialist. If you have a bit of pre-procedure anxiety, they will give you a valium and after that you will feel muy tranquillo. |
