Not sure where to post this--a search for VoIP came up here and Hotels, Trans, etc. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, there are some businesses that make Int'l. calling on cells much cheaper--it includes a box at the bottom with some providers' info: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121919500075055319.html Please post your finds here--there's got to be more and maybe better companies. |

Here's another one. http://www.cellularld.com/ Calls to pretty much anywhere in the world from the US are 5 cents per minute and the call quality is surprisingly good. Problem is, it does not help much when you're overseas. In CR for example, you would still be placing the equivalent to an international call. If you do have a handheld with wifi and a wifi connection, you can use Skype mobile although it tends to be a bit bouncy... |

Metro PCS' Metro Connect service ranges from .02 to .20 to call from the USA to international destinations. Most land lands are .02 to .06. Calling a cellphone is at the high end of .20. this is in addition to the "all you can eat" domestic calling plan at $45 per month plus taxes. I received my Magic Jack (www.magicjack.com) and look forward to testing it in CR and the Dom Rep during September. If your cell phone service has a call forwarding feature, you can forward your cell phone calls to your magic jack number and receive calls free offshore. You are suppose to also be able to make and receive offshore calls from offshore at the fixed rate of $20.00 per year directly to your magic jack US number. Various area codes are available. Must have a PC, USB port, and highspeed internet access. Hand set or headset with microphone is needed too. |

Elroy, don’t the mobile phone companies charge you at international rates no matter where you call? You are still considered on an international roaming network whatever number you call? |

If you are referring to the mobile phone forwarding to the magic number, the magic jack number is a USA number. Therefore no international rate charge applicable. Of course this is a US cell phone number forwarding to a US land line number. Except the magic jack is offshore connected to a PC with high speed internet. At least that's how it is advertised. As I said I plan to test it in SEP. Input from others on this board suggest it works in Sportsmans and from other CR high speed connections. Feel free to do your own research at www.magicjack.com. I do not have anything to do with the company. Only trying to find a Virtual Office solution that will allow me to travel internationally while still generating billable hours. |

There is a new service I just found that allows you to call to and from anywhere globally for like $.02, a friend is forwarding me the info. so I'll pass it along when I get it. It is called MY Global Talk and he is thrilled with it. |

I ordered a magic jack yeaterday and plan to test it thoroughly on my upcoming September trip to CR. It will be nice being able to call home regularly without extra cost of the inconvenience of having to write long emails. I also have friends scattered across Europe etc and it will be nice being able to chat without any cost. I was also wondering, is this available to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan? Would be great if they can call home with some regularity. |
