Street Signs in Costa Rica A Close Reality
The dream of many of Costa Rica's Avenidas and Calles having street signs is a dream that just might come through thanks to an initiative by the Grupo Corporativo M&M which will be installing the first street signs in the municipalities of Tarrazú and Limón.

San José will follow as the next municipality to get street signs on its roads before the end of the year, according to Mauricio Muñoz, representing M&M.

The idea is not new. Muñoz said that the project began some 15 years ago but it wasn't until a decree by the previous administration of Pacheco de la Espriella that entrusted Correso de Costa Rica (post office) the job of making an analysis of all the streets and boulevards, however, did not complete the task of putting up the street signs.

Muñoz said that the metallic street signs will be installed on concrete posts standing some 2.1 metres tall, which on one side will identify the street and boulevard and include a shield of the canton, the postal code and the name of the district. On the other side the metallic street sign will have space for advertising which will pay for the project.

Muñoz added that the street signs will be replaced on a regular basis to keep them in a good state of repair.

"We became interested in this project because Costa Rica is the only country in Latin America that does not have a proper street sign system. We have all the necessary municipal permits and hope to begin with the project real soon", said Muñoz.

Other municipalities that will get street signs will be Nicoya, Pococí, Siguirres, Alajuelita, Curridabat, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago.

Oh my God, what's that sound I hear... sounds like glaciers forming in Hell.

One fact omitted is that all street signs on one way streets will face away from oncoming traffic. You don't want to rush headlong into rationality, you know.

Soo... how’s the price for scrap metal in SJ?

Somehow, I see a glut of metal poles in the next few years    …

That's a good one, Mendo  and all joking aside you may actually be right. But then why then wouldn't they also cut down the metal poles and take those too?

Place me in the camp of those who are very dubious how soon this will ever happen in CR.

I also have some other doubts about this whole scheme. Of course, this would be really great for all of us gringos who have our share of troubles finding our way around SJ even armed with a good map. However, how much would it help the locals? No one uses street addresses anyway, opting for such location identifiers as "150 meters (thats a block and a half for us gringos) north of the Paseo Colon KFC". Okay I guess that uses the street name Paseo Colon, but who really needs a street sign to know when they've found Paseo Colon? How about "300 meters south and 100 meters east of Soledad"? I guess they'll need to label all the various landmarks in SJ too. And then there is "200 meters east of Coca Cola". That refers to an old bottling plant that no longer exists. Where would they put the sign for that? Maybe they also need to put up historical markers too. No, wait, this is getting ridiculous! They may get some signs put up sooner than later, but I don't see how having what we see as a basic navigational requirement is going to change the tico cultural traditions any time soon.

BTW, local taxi drivers should be overjoyed by this news, but I also have grave doubts that even they'd know how to utilize these signs. Half of them don't seem to have a clue how to find anything in SJ as it is and giving them street directions only seems to confuse them more. And these are the guys who drive the coty 10 hours a day and should know it like the back of their hand. Go figure.

I would like to thank ID for bringing this (and other) interesting local news stories to our attention. I do enjoy reading them.

To gently correct Brothers Mendo and Proligo--The article says the posts will be concrete, with only the actual signs being metal. That's not to say there won't be some serious shinnying going on...
100% agreement with everything else Sr. Prolijo said though.

Thats funny too. I was just thinking that they may not have to worry about the street signs diappearing if they get that video surveillance camera system that they were talking about a while back installed first.

to correct jazzbo correcting mendo and prolijo, I doubt much shinnying will be necessary for signs 2 metres high. :D
