That's a good one, Mendo

and all joking aside you may actually be right. But then why then wouldn't they also cut down the metal poles and take those too?
Place me in the camp of those who are very dubious how soon this will ever happen in CR.
I also have some other doubts about this whole scheme. Of course, this would be really great for all of us gringos who have our share of troubles finding our way around SJ even armed with a good map. However, how much would it help the locals? No one uses street addresses anyway, opting for such location identifiers as "150 meters (thats a block and a half for us gringos) north of the Paseo Colon KFC". Okay I guess that uses the street name Paseo Colon, but who really needs a street sign to know when they've found Paseo Colon? How about "300 meters south and 100 meters east of Soledad"? I guess they'll need to label all the various landmarks in SJ too. And then there is "200 meters east of Coca Cola". That refers to an old bottling plant that no longer exists. Where would they put the sign for that? Maybe they also need to put up historical markers too. No, wait, this is getting ridiculous! They may get some signs put up sooner than later, but I don't see how having what we see as a basic navigational requirement is going to change the tico cultural traditions any time soon.
BTW, local taxi drivers should be overjoyed by this news, but I also have grave doubts that even they'd know how to utilize these signs. Half of them don't seem to have a clue how to find anything in SJ as it is and giving them street directions only seems to confuse them more. And these are the guys who drive the coty 10 hours a day and should know it like the back of their hand. Go figure.
I would like to thank ID for bringing this (and other) interesting local news stories to our attention. I do enjoy reading them.
