Earthquake Shakes Costa Rica
Inside Costa Rica - August 15, 2008

An earthquake registering 6 points on the Richter scale was felt throughout half the country. The epicentre was located 122 kilometres south of Laurel de Corredores, in the Pacific ocean, on the Panama fault. Javier Pacheco of the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (Ovsicori), explained that the territory is part of the border between the two countries.

The head of the Cruz Roja (Red Cross), Saúl Morales, for the area said that the earthquake shook the area hard, people fearing that their houses would fall on them.

The quake was so strong that it was felt as far as San José and Cartago.

Yes ! And the taller the building you are in the more you notice it.

I think thats about the 5th or 6th good one I've felt in about 2 1/2 years.

The USGS is reporting it as a 5.4 quake. That's a big difference between a 6.0 which would be 6 times stronger than a 5.4.

Add 34x10/2.14+6.865x10 to the 23 power and you have the price of tea in China... for what that's worth. :lol:

Not to distract anyone from the beauty of the Richter scale, but yes, I felt it up on floor 5 of our apt. building. It didn't feel particularly stronger than the tremors we get from time to time. I did notice it enough to mention it to my roomdog, who didn't feel it till he stopped rocking in his rocking chair. Nothing like that Thanksgiving-ish quake in 04.

After review, the Geological Survey downgraded the estimated intensity to 4.8 magnitude.
The quake was barely felt in San José. Curiously the locations of most intensity were in Heredia and Ochomogo, based on the real time seismographs of the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica in Heredia.

The duration of the quake was about 150 seconds, according to the online printouts.
No alert was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which first reported the quake.

Yikes ! We just had one that woke me up from a nice sleep. This building was shaking back and fourth. Scary !

Early morning 6.2 quake
was felt all over country

An earthquake that was estimated at a magnitude 6.2 struck at a point on the Panamá-Costa Rica border at 12:12 a.m. today.

The epicenter appeared to be a few kilometers inland from the peninsula that both countries share.

The location was listed by the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center to be 55 km (35 miles) west-southwest of David, Panamá, 45 km (30 miles) south-southeast of Golfito and 220 km (135 miles) southeast of San José.

The quake was felt in San José as a short and a long tremor. The duration may have been as much as a minute.

The area of the quake, Punta Burica, and nearby Puerto Armulles in Panamá are a frequent location for such events. There have been no reports of injuries or damage yet, the magnitude of the quake is in the danger range.

Online seismographs at the Obvservatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica showed that the quake was felt all over the country.

A quake hit the same area early Dec. 25, 2003, and killed two persons and damaged at least 70 homes. That quake was registered as a 6.3 magnitude.

ooooh scary. does CR get disastrous earthquakes or just these little rollers?

With the active volcanoes so near, quakes are to be expected. I felt the one last night for a long time. It was smoooooth, not violent like a near one so I was pretty sure it was centered some distance from San Jose.

The last bad one was in 1991 and struck Limon. The quake killed 2 dozen people, injured several hundred and lifted the shoreline 4 or 5 feet. 12-13,000 in Limon province were left homeless. This one registered a magnitude of 7.7.

This one was nothing the one in 2004 was much much stronger.
