Anyone have any experience with that ATM...as in exchange rate? I have always used Scotia Bank to do all my currency exchanges and their ATM's outside they're branches and found their exchange rate solid.

However, given that machine is in the baggage claim area, I'm wondering if "it" takes advantage of it's placement and maybe kinda sorta sticks one up exchange rate wise?? Thanks!

You will get the same exchange rate. The rate you receive is not determined by who owns the machine or where it is located. The rate is the rate that the bank who issued your card charges. The only charge that is determined by the owner of the ATM machine is the service fee if any.

I have never used the one upstairs at the airport but always use the one close to the market in SJ. It is a small walk up atm that you have to swipe your card to enter the booth.
If you use Bank of America back home, you shouldn't get charged any fees as Scotia is part of their network, if you do they are easy enough to get reversed, just a pain in having to call the bank to do it.

Who charged you the fee?

I use Red Total machines (Scotia, BAC San Jose, etc) including the one upstairs at SJO and have never paid a fee either to the owner of the machine or my Credit Union.

Have never figured out why people continue to use Bank of Fees. You payed them 6% for the "privilege" of accessing yoor own money.

I use that ATM all the time and have never been charged a fee from Scotia Bank. In fact any ATM I have ever used anywhere in CR has never charged a fee to withdraw cash...dollars or colones. The exchange rate is generally the day's interbank rate. MY bank does charge me a "foreign fee" of 1 % but I can live with that. Many banks have begun to charge this on debit transactions outside the country.

The only time I have ever been charged a fee was one morning when the Scotia ATM was down. HSBC has a branch in the same shopping center so I used their ATM. My account was charged a dollar by HSBC.

Scotia Bank has never charged a dime in fees and always given current market exchange rates.

The Captial One money market account ATM card also does not charge dime one in the way of fees.

Thus, all transactions to date have been straight up and with no fees. I don't like fees. I guess, if I have the time on Sept. 3, I'll see about the Scotia Bank ATM in the baggage claim area of SJO......

I am hesitant to post this because few of you will believe it and actually even after checking my bank statement many times I do not believe it, but I used the ATM (the dollar one) in the Del Rey and was not charged a fee!

Please don't tell John though.

Why would we not believe it A lot of us here have used that ATM without paying a fee. Very very very few ATM's in CR charge a fee. The hell with not telling big John do not tell the banks in CR

Heading down in Oct. - first trip - would it be better to exchange a couple a hundred bucks here in the States (while the dollar is going up) or just wait till we get in SJO?

Of course many of us have used that ATM and not been charged a fee. But I am sure that the first time you used that ATM and was not charged a fee you were surprised too and that was my point.

Exchange your $ to c in Costa Rica. There is not a bank or exchange house in the US that will meet the exchange rate you can get from a bank in Costa Rica.
