I walked by two of the recently closed MPs today, the Dungeon and Musas, and here's what I saw/heard. There were a handful of guys standing around/working on the entrance to the Dungeon. They told me it would be open again this Monday. I'm guessing it's something to do with handicap access or something, since there were working on the entry way.

As far as Musas goes, The sign on the door said open but I peered in the window and there was a guy (I presume) sleeping (I presume) on the couches. There was a big pile of tile and dirt inside, as if they were doing some remodeling. Just what sort of remodeling I have no idea, but there were no girls visible and it didn't look like they were ready to greet any customers.

At any rate, Murrecos is still open, though it was empty when I walked by (all the girls busy perhaps?) It seems like they are using the health and safety stuff to harass the MPs, but they aren't going for the throat, which would be the pimping angle, a difference between a civil citation and a criminal charge. But then, what do I know?

Thanks for the update, I had wondered about Marruecos.

It DOES seem kind of stupid if this is really about "handicap access"...let's raid the MP's, have the local news show up, then write some citations to these places to ensure that guys in wheelchairs have access to these places once they re-open.

I've stayed away from commenting on this till now, but it seems like an attempt to show that they're doing something to prospective voters rather than an attempt to truly shut these places down for good.

This makes perfect sense to me. Of course, the police are not going to shut down EVERY MP in San Jose forever. But they face pressure from various groups, so they have to do something. Periodically, they do a few raids and get some coverage, shutting the places down for a bogus reason like handicap access. It looks like they have lots of power and are getting tough. Then they go away.

It's kind of like when a cop pulls a suspect over without enough evidence to arrest or stop him. Just wait for the suspect to go a couple of miles over the speed limit, and there you go. Reason for stoppage.

The front room at Marruecos where the girls sat in the past is now an "office".

The girls are down the hallway in the back so be sure to go all the way in and not just peek in the door to see what's going on

If they shut down Molino Rojo I will start to get worried.

The handicap angle is really funny. The majority of the work I do is ADA(Americans with Disabilities Act) related. I can guarantee you there is not a sidewalk in San Jose that is ADA compliant. Too much debris, not wide enough in many places for a mobility device. Also the curb cuts in many places are not wide enough for a chair or scooter. So maybe they should just shut the city down?

Yes, San Jose is a HORRIBLE town to walk in. And the Ticos don't make it any better by insisting on walking 2 and 3 abreast and stopping in their tracks at the most narrow point to shoot the breeze. Add umbrellas to that mix and you get... well, you get San Jose.

God , I never understand this . I got to say this is really STUPID. Are Americans the ones to invent 'single file' and we forgot to tell everyone.

Come on Bilko, they aren't in any hurry, remember, it is Costa Rica, relaxed, laid back, everyone chilling out... no need to rush... given the mentality (God bless them) they have no idea anyone else would need to rush by them.

They aren't in a hurry when they are blocking the sidewalk, but get them behind the wheel and they will run you down if you get in THEIR way. To me it's not a matter of hurry or no hurry, it's a lack of consideration, which is epidemic here. Not that I'm going back to the States, mind you.

It really is just a different philosophy of things. Reminds me of when I used to live in Taiwan. You could be walking home on a crowded sidewalk. You try to slow down for a second to look at a menu on the sidewalk.Or glance at a ballgame on tv in a bar you walk by.Literally everybody just walks into you.Little Chinese people bouncing off your 6 foot + North American self. Like ping pong balls, almost. So you could have the tico way and walk around them, or the Chinese way and have them walk over you.

Apologies to all for dragging this out. The trouble in San Jose is that the only way to walk around anybody is to step into the (murderous) traffic, since the sidewalks are so narrow and cluttered. I am big enough to knock people down if I ran into them, but I have no illusions that I can change the culture here. Like most people, I accept what I can't change... and bitch about it!

i agree with bilko, its not so much the people on the sidewalk. its the sidewalks themselves. they have so many holes and cracks that u have to look down as your walking or yall step in a hole or drain missing cover as i have almost done on ocasion
