I've been coming to SJO 3x per year for two years and plan to continue. My excuse is usually to take private Spanish lessons for a week, which I really do. My wife, who I would prefer to dump, but for many reasons cannot (long story), has been itching to acompany me. Last night she said in a very firm voice, "Next time you go to CR, I want to go." I could bring her for my first weekend and put her on a plane on Sunday night. I could have her stay with me at the Presidente, we could walk around, go to El Pueblo, out to dinner, etc. My question is whether she would see enough mongers with babes passing by in the Prez lobby to start getting suspicious about what's going on. Any opinions or experience in this?

This was an inquiry I had my first trip, as I was meeting with legitimate business folks in San Jose and I didn't want them to think I was mongering. While the Presidente doesn't scream 'sex tourism,' it might whisper it. There are lots of mongers taking chicas up to their rooms or dining with them in the news cafe. If you want to stay in the gulch, there are several other nice hotels that are not Tica friendly and wouldn't conjure up suspicion. YMMV depending upon how discerning your wife is. If you're looking for nice digs, Gran de Oro might be one suggestion (I think that's the fancy hotel downtown). You might consider one of the hotels in Escazu, such as the Marriott Courtyard. I've stayed at the Clarion Amon Plaza several times and would never have suspected it to be a mongering hotel. With several massage parlors (hopefully open) nearby, your wife will be none the wiser if you slip out for a quickie.

Ciaociao

I would stay away from the Presidente. Yes she will see old gringos with young hot latinas and assume the worst. The safest hotel, in my opinion, is the Gran Hotel Costa Rica {not to be confused with the Gran de Oro which is not downtown but off Paseo Colon). It is close to tourist things and far enough away from the HDR that she will most likely never go there. It is chica HOSTILE! so she will be insulated from the possibilty of running into a hooker in the lobby or restaurant.

The Sleep Inn/Holiday Inn will not work as she will undoubtedly stick her head into the HDR at some point since they are so close. Good luck.

Are you sure she doesn't already know what goes on down there?

She most likely does but that does not mean you throw it in her face. "Discretion is the better part of valor"

Take her fishing up north near Nicaragua. She will wonder what you ever saw in Costa Rica. Do not take her to the Presidente.

My divorce cost me 300K.
I was married 21 years.
If I knew then what I know now I would not have been married at all.
But Most Important I would have paid twice that amount to be single now.
Divorce is expensive because IT IS WORTH IT

Just to make the consensus choice easier for you:
www.granhotelcostarica.com/costa-rica-hotel/[language] = English, Spanish, etc. Looks like a nice double has a rack rate of $135. You go, guy--sounds like the classic 1930 bathtub is a hoot.

Another danger is she will enjoy Costa Rica so much that she will start wanting to accompany you 3X a year. One option that might work would be to sign up for a week at a language school with the home stay option. Some of the schools give you the option of having your wife stay with you and your host family, and let you add days before or after your course for about $18 a day. Most schools are far enough away from the gulch, and the no frills accomodations might be enough to discourage her from wanting to return.

I like it, no frills to discourage her!!!! Excellent idea.

If she doesn't like heat and humidity, take her to Quepos and to a dumpy hotel. You should even be able to find a Spanish school in Manuel ANtonio in case you need cover. You may need to sit out or limit your mongering on this trip as this is more of a "cover your tracks type trip."

Or if you must stay in San Jose, DON'T EVEN THINK PRESIDENTE AGAIN, hell, you could even see one of your favoritas there. But your wife will figure it out and you may never return to CR alone again. Hell, I would just stay out of The Gulch. Go to the Marriott in Escazu, or the Best Western Irazu, The Costa Rica Tennis Club in Sabana, a hotel in Heredia, there is one always advertised for less than $50 in the Tico Times, I forget the name but it seems very far from the action. If you want to sneak away solo to "your school," both Escazu and Heredia have malls where your wife can spend her time. STAY OUT OF THE GULCH!

PURA VIDA!
