I've made it a point to find out what I can about the girls I get to know (other than the one-offs) and one of the questions I have been asking lately is at what age they stopped going to school. I asked a long-time regular of mine this question and was rather stunned to find that she had never gone to school at all, though she had taught herself to read and write. Other girls I have asked usually answer that they quit around 12 or 13. Now most of these girls are Desamparados girls, not the high-end Del Rey types.

I was wondering if anybody else asks this question and if so, what the answers have been.

On a related subject, does anybody know if there are set educational requirements for jobs such as cashier or salesclerk? I have gotten the impression that for certain types of jobs, a high school diploma is required. I have no idea if it's required by the employer or if it's a government set thing, such as minimum wage. If anybody can help me out on this, I appreciate it.

One day I got on an amiga's case because her emails were very heard for me to read. All in CAPS with no punctuation & many words misspelled. She finally told me that she did not go very far in school.

Like many of the girls we know in C.R. her family background is pretty tragic. This girl was abused by a Grandfather. She married young to get out of the house.

Sound familiar?

I would suppose that the educational level varies widely. Naturally, you would expect the poor working girls to have little education. However, you see many sophisticated young women around San Jose; well dressed and poised, obviously with good jobs. I admit, I'm not one to give a good opinion on the schools in Costa Rica, but from what little I've seen, the Ch*ldren do seem to get a good education. Perhaps one of the locals could offer their opinion on this. I'm curious as well.

The vast majority of Tica, Nica, and Dominica chicas working in the "profession" in San Jose in all venues have at most 6-7 years of school and in public schools which, thou much better than many other Latin countries, is still far below the standards of American schools. In fact their average education level is on par with about the 3rd grade in the states. Sad thing is that many of them are actually very intelligent, and would have probably done well in a good school if they had had the chance.

Most, not all, Colombianas and Panamanians working in the REy and other places in CR have much closer to a high school degree.

These are just my observations over the years and are not facts based on a scientific servey.

I have a circle of Tica friends that all have pretty much the same story. They graduated high school, started some kind of college, but needed a little bit of extra money for tuition or rent, so went to the Rey once in a while. Over time, the money was so good in the Del Rey that they forgot about college, and became full time party girls. The only problem is that these chicas are now 23 or 24, haven't saved a dime, and their looks are starting to fade.

From what I have seen the average working girl quits school the first time she gets pregnant, usually about 15 or 16. It takes her a couple of years to figure out that the Tico she loved so much only wanted the sex part not the responsibility. She then leaves the baby with moma and heads for the Del Ray or Zona Blue. Before getting pregnant, she is running the street trying to stay away from home as much as possible because life in a 400 sg. foot house with 6 or 7 brothers and sisters is hard to take.

There are definitely some educated women working in the higher end places, but I would think they were a minority. In any case, I will continue to ask that question and if anyone else does, I hope he will share his information.

On a related topic, does anyone know the cost to a family of having a Ch*ld in school? As far as I know, all the schools require uniforms as a minimum. Beyond that, I believe they have to supply their own pencils and notebooks. I am not totally sure about books, though naturally there aren't books until they learn to read. Do the costs of going to school increase as the Ch*ldren get older? I believe this to be the case, but would like some hard facts if anyone has any. If this is true, it would explain why Ch*ldren stop going to school. Male Ch*ldren also quit school and it's not because they got pregnant. Anyway, any real data would be appreciated.

I am not totally sure about books,

My ex had K*ds in Bataan. Every semester we would buy a couple books and send 'em on the bus. They cost about $8.00-$10.00 each.

I partied with a Nica last night who said she was working 'cause she needed money for her K*ds' Collegio in Nicarauga. I think it was approx. $200 for the two K*ds. Uniforms, books, supplies and of course the coveted status symbol book bag.

From 6th grade to Master's degree working part time. Same same as in the good ole USA.

Some of the best times have been with the girls that can carry a conversation in English and Spanish all the while making a point yet being completely fem fatal making me feel Super Man Like.

Then again, the street savvy H.S. Drop Outs have the street smarts and will take care of their man holding on to all they can doing what ever they can.

I would be careful using "standards of American schools." The "standards" of U.S. schools vary greatly, with most public schools, as everywhere else in the world, falling at the bottom.

High school diplomas are NOT degrees. Now, high schools that award the international baccalaureate are a different breed. Most U.S. citizens and residents do not have a snowball's chance in completing such a program.

I have met working girls along the entire spectrum, with most having between seven and twelve years. In this regard, little difference exists between U.S. workers and Latin workers.
