After my last trip to CR I was not impressed by the local beers. I love beer and yes I'm picky! Can anyone suggest something good besides the mainstream beers?

Beer taste is somewhat subjective so it will be difficult to suggest something that you will like. Perhaps if you list some beers that you normally drink someone else who drinks the same might be able to point you in the right direction. I like Bavaria Negra when I'm in Costa Rica.

There is only one brewer/distributor of beer in Costa Rica.

They brew Imperial, Bavaria, Rock Ice, Pilsen and under license Heineken. They recently started distributing the Nicaraguan beer Tona. Most Tico bars will only carry those brands.

There was a micro brewery some years ago in Curridabat by the name Brewery & Restaurant K&S. I believe it is still there but not being a beer drinker not sure of the quality.

I'm not saying Imperial is the best beer on earth... But boy would I love to drinking one down right about now... Means I would be IN Costa Rica.. not talking about it.

IMO costa rican beers are far better than the watered down swill that passes for american beer. American beer is known for its low hop content and for using cheap filler grains like corn and rice instead of the more expensive malt. They never should have been allowed to call it beer. In germany because of the purity law they could not have.

The brew pub in curridabat K&S has been closed for about a yr. They were german owned and made good beer.

But drink what tastes good to you.

If you don't like the local beers, you can go to the Auto Mercado a couple blocks west of Parque Morazan and find a pretty good selection of imported beers, including several North American and European beers. They usually have some English stouts and ales andsometimes some German or Dutch lagers and pilsners.

I usually prefer heavier, maltier British-style ales myself, but in Costa Rica's climate I think Imperial is a pretty good beer. Wish I had a cold one in my hand right now. But then, I wish I was drinking it in San Jose too.

I'm with mongeral, I don't drink much beer with the exception of occasional US heavier micro brews. And if I visit Europe and have real beer there, I can't stand any US production beer for the next six months. Of course a chilled martini always cleanses the palate.

K&S is not closed. Maybe they moved or something, but I know at least one pub serving K&S Boch on tap, so they're still around.

Hurm, I can agree that there are easily better beers than what is brewed in Costa Rica (think Belgium beers, good god good!). However, Costa Rican beers are a solid average to better than average beer in my opinion. 8)

I love beer but am not wild about Imperial while in Costa Rica. But while in So Fla it is delicious. :D

While I think costa rican beers are pretty good ,especially bavaria. The problem seems to be that lots of places turn their coolers off at night and the beer continually get warm then cold day after day. That is why the beer is rarely ice cold and people drink their beer with ice in a temperate climate, go figure. The funny thing is that it probably would be cheaper to leave the coolers on all the time because once all that mass is cold it takes very little energy to sustain it.
