Per today's AM CR

"Most every expat knows there are literally hundreds of brothels throughout San José and thousands throughout the country. "

I didn't think there were that much outside of San Jose. Yes Jaco and a few casas here and there but that many?

Is there a map for the thousands please?

I asked a Tico about this and he said earlier (like in the 70's and 80's) more small towns had "places of ill repute" like bars and discos where prostitutes were known to hang out, but over time it's been pushed mostly to downtown San Jose, with a few formal places in other large cities and a larger informal network of "masajitas" etc who operate with phone numbers passed word of mouth and sometimes through classifieds.

Don't know how true that is but I definitely don't believe there are thousands of brothels in the country.

That number sounds exaggerated, but in my travels and talking to others, I have found that sex is available in a lot more places than ever get reported on CRT. I have been to places in some quite unlikely locales and have heard of numerous others. Would the average CRT member be interested? I doubt it. Just to drop some names of a few locations, I know or have heard of places in Guacimo, Quepos, San Isidro, Puntarenas, Siquirres, Limon and Ciudad Quesada. I know that guys have found company in lots of other places, though not at 'brothels' per se (on site places). If you don't speak fluent Espanol and you don't have a high grime tolerance these places may not be for you. But anybody who has enough Spanish can always ask a Taxi driver and chances are good he knows somebody who can relieve you of a leche build up.

Bilko, good point and interesting places. I too have found such places in Quepos, Puntarenas. I had a hard time finding such a place in San Isidro. A gringo has to be really be low key in that town. There are hardly any gringos there and acting as a vacationer interested in their culture will get you more mileage than coming off as a sex tourist. I would'nt mind having a beer with you sometime and talking about these places. ANd yeah put on your blinders if the grime bothers you. There was a place in Quepos where I questioned if I'd make it out of there. THe funny thing is in all these towns it is much easier to score freebies with regulars if you are willing to "play the game." I have scored regular chicas in all the aboved mentioned towns except Puntarenas. That town is a real dump, chicas are tough to talk to, they seem uninterested in gringos, and I couldn't even find p4p with the exception of Hambergo which I was warned to stay out of. Maybe I should have checked it out anyway. OH, and I was pick pocketed in a bar there. And I always thought I was vigilant about that.

Not sure they number in the thousands but there are brothels in every town, village, hamlet in Costa Rica. Gringos will never find them and will rarely even be told about them unless they live in that town and become well accepted by the Ticos.

There are scores of places in Pavas. I know a guy, gringo, who is fluent in Spanish and despite his best efforts with his auto mechanic, pulperia clerk, produce vendor, etc. has been unable to find the location of even one.

Yeah those grimey plades kinda scare me. Anyone ever driven around Pavas? I got sidetracked one time on the way back to the airport and was lucky it was 10:30AM. Not that bad but man did I see some impoverished conditions. I like to see it though. Puts a lot of stuff in perspective.

Thanks for the posts.
