Dominican and Costa Rican officials meet on trafficking
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Immigration officials held a meeting with Dominican authorities Wednesday seeking to stem the influx of illegal and quasi-legal residents of that country. Immigration of women from the Dominican Republic has been tied to human trafficking. There is a proliferation of false documents and also fake marriages with Costa Ricans.

Sources in Santo Domingo said that the Dominican immigration agency has begun an investigation into trafficking and prostitution in Costa Rica. Adonaida Medina, the Dominican ambassador in Costa Rica, was among those at the meeting. Dominican and Colombian prostitutes have displaced local women in that occupation.

Here's a follow-up on the original story:

Prostitution Probe Prompts Dominican - Costa Rican Cooperation
Inside Costa Rica

The Dominican and Costa Rican governments agreed to strengthen cooperation in migratory issues and to coordinate action to control prostitution and the traffic of people. A Dominican delegation visited Costa Rica and met with Interior Ministry officials to draft an agreement that guarantees regular immigration between both countries.

Dominican Immigration director Carlos Amarante; Foreign Relations vice minister Rosario Graciano de los Santos and ambassador Adonaida Medina discussed with their Costa Rican counterparts the arrival of Dominicans to Costa Rica, protected in "marriage of rights or convenience" but soon change to prostitution.

Graciano said the Costa Rican authorities were apprised of the Dominican Police’s investigation in the case and into the network suspected of taking Dominicans to that country. The Dominican and Costa Rican commissions visited the tourism resort zone at Jacé, and the bars where allegedly dozens of Dominican sexual workers operate, though Graciano said they verified the case had been “exaggerated.”

"though Graziano verified that the case had been "exagerated". Nah...c'mon, they wouldn't exagerate a situation like this just to pretend they are actually doing something....would they?
