Sorry to report that my $80 root canal went south today. Cost to repair- $1325 plus a triple bridge for $3K if I do it here. Endo said it was a piss poor job. |

I had a root canal on a molar done by Dr. Robert Sanchez [referred to me by Dr. Chen] and 2 porcelain crowns done by Dr. Chen, along with a whitening, for a grand total of $530. This was done in October 07. So far, I'm pleased with everything I had done.

That is what I mean. all of my crowns where done by the Doc, and I am more then pleased... as far as the filling coming out..it happens... No need to jump ship.....besides, it gives me an excuse to return to San Jose... |

Yeah.....Don't think you can't have problems with the work you have done by U.S. dentists. I've had lots of problems with dental work done by mine........and to add insult to injury, it cost 4 times as much.

Zebra How was the whitening? I am a heavy soda drinker and over the years my teeth are not as pearly as they once were. Is it laser or the bleaching? I was hoping for the laser, as it is supposed to be easier and faster. |

Mr, It was the bleaching type. I think it was about five bleaching sessions that lasted about one hour each. I prabably wouldn't do it again, as the results were not all that good. Laser or the ZOOM [maybe that is laser??] is prabably the way to go. I think the charge for the bleaching was about $80, which also included a cleaning. Couldn't complain, because my U.S. dentist charges more than that for just a cleaning. Zebra |

Zebra’s right, I paid a lot to my local dentist, and most of the work failed. The finale straw was two of four implants fell out at about the same time. The Doctor wanted about 4 G’s to do it again…telling me what I deal I was getting…Pissed, a friend of mine said “Go to Costa Rica…that was 9 implants ago… If I did the math I guess. 14-15 G’s but its worth having all you phucking teeth… the doctor in the states all ready had made that much off of me and I still need implants..... I started with …Dr, C @ Prisma Dental and he did a bang up job for $350...then 550...the last time I was there he wanted750 per implant, but that is not the crown or the crown butment....1500 last time...also as time went on the price kept going up for the little things…x-rays-fillings-cleaning...then ID told me about Dr. Chen and have been pleased ever since. I had read my pal Scuba's bad review of Dr. Chen, but I thought like Zebra. A bad experience can probably happen with any dentist or other professional from time to time. With Dr. Chen there had been all these glowing reviews plus I figured I was having done was replacing an old filling that had come out. How badly could anyone screw that up. Well, I was wrong. The man was certainly nice and courtly enough, though he did have some nervous mannerisms that I felt were unusual. But while he might have spoken in a professional manner I was not at all impressed with what he did or rather didn't do for me. First, I should explain my background. I took lousy care of my teeth as youth - irregular brushing and lots of soda pop that continues to this day. As a result I have lots of cavities and lots of fillings all of which have had to be replaced over the years. My back teeth actually have more fillings than original teeth to the point that with any more fillings and they will probably have to be crowned. In fact, when one of the fillings on my left rear molar came out a few weeks ago I half suspected that time had come. It was with that that I made my appointment with Dr. Chen and was hoping for the best. He barely looked at my mouth, barely drilled at all, barely tamped done on what little filling he put in my tooth, didn't take any x-rays, or put in any of those little carbon paper strips to see if what he put in was grinding improperly against my other teeth. But at least I walked away with my original tooth still more or less intact. Well, only 3 and a half days later on the plane back to the states his filling came loose. With all my other fillings that had NEVER happened with a new filling. But at least I only wasted $90 for my visit to Dr. Chen So, as soon as I got back to the US, I made an appointment with a local dentist. They took what seemed like over 2 dozen x-rays (for the special price of only $59). They also explained what I had already heard from my old dentist - at some point my rear teeth will be so shot that I won't be able to simply re-fill them but will have to get them crowned. I was hoping that day would be put off but they also explained why they puts me at greater risk. Old fillings corrode, which causing seepage and potential cavities or weakening of the tooth structure under the fillings. that in turn can cause the filling to buckle and come loose all at once, which is what happened to my old filling. Already having crowned teeth above them, which are harder material, also may have contributed to their coming loose too. Worse, the filling might NOT have come loose but continued to rot deeper and deeper down into the tooth to the point that not only would I have needed to have my tooth crowned but I would have also needed an expensive root canal. The dentist pointed out to me so I could see for myself where the "rotting" was taking place under Dr Chen's filling. If Dr. chen had taken an x-ray he'd have seen it too. Fortunately, there is no rotting yet under my other molars which also have extensive old fillings but I'm not going to wait until they do or until my fillings suddenly come out and I have to get my crowns done right away and thus have to go with a more expensive US dentist as I ultimately had to do with that tooth. Its not that I've given up on all CR dentists, just Dr. Chen. Nor am I saying that bad dentists are confined to CR. The US certainly has its share. What I'm saying is that one should choose their dentists carefully and not base it just on saving a little money. One's dental health is much more important than that. The lesson I learned from this is that just because you walk out of the dentist and your smile looks nice at that moment (or that he was painless or polite) doesn't mean the dentist did a good job. It may not happen in 3.5 days or even a year, but the foundation for future trouble may have been laid which will show up years later but also years before they should have. I'm glad some of you guys are happy with Dr. Chen. I hope he really did do as good a job as you THINK he did. However, I for one am never going back to him. |

Unfortunately I have been receiving some information concerning Dr. Chen that is very disturbing. Two individuals who have been going to Dr. Chen before I did, and indeed recommended him to me, reported some concerns so serious on their last visit that they have stopped going to him. The first thought that Dr. Chen acted somewhat confused and not really aware of what he was doing. The second gentleman felt that Dr. Chen was having trouble controlling his hand movements and might be showing earl signs of Parkinson disease. I would suggest that everyone be very cautious if they choose to see Dr. Chen. I reluctantly have to withdraw my recommendation of using his services. |

They did all the work on a Friends mouth and she was very happy. The end result was they showed me on an xray and with a camera the rear tooth that Dr. Chen worked on had a small cavity in the rear that he did not address and the filling he did do was on top of a cavity. They re-did the work. |

Root canals do fail but only 6% of the time if there was no infection beforehand, more like 15% if infected at the time of the RC. I have a possible RC failure and have performed extensive research on it and the possible remediations. I concluded to go straight to an implant and don't spend time, money, pain etc. on a re-treatment as success rate is not optimal, costs extensive and could also require crown lengthening which is both expensive and compromises jaw bone structural integrity not to mention painful and disruptive. That is very important if you ever decide to go to an implant after that!!!!!!!! May make it more difficult then to do an implant if the RC re-treat fails which is higher failure rate than 1st go around. THE BEST THING I FOUND IN ALL THIS RESEARCH IS A STUDY I FOUND FROM THE U. OF PENN. WHICH I POSTED A COUPLE MONTHS BACK. I SAYS THAT EVEN THOUGH AN X-RAY SAYS THE RC HAS FAILED SO LONG AS THERE IS NOT PAIN IT DOESN'T REQUIRE RE-TREAT. Just stating what the report said but good enough for me to decide to monitor it until absolute necessary. All dentists IMHO are evil and try to scare you into the next treatment. My RC tooth didn't even need it when I went in but the crown failed because I think she drilled it down to much intentionally on purpose when I didn't even have any pain B4 hand. The evil dentist tricked me into a Crown which turned into a RC and now a possible RC failure!!!!!! |

I went to my local dentist about a month ago to have the filling that Dr. Chen had fixed refilled with a resin... Cost.... $200.00 for visit-cleaning-Xray- $325.00 to fill the tooth with a resin. That was at the first of the month.. About a week ago, the filling formed a little hole on the back of the tooth.. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I called Dr. Crook and his asst: informed me that the tooth really needed a root canal and a crown, and that the filling may or may not hold. WHAT SH*T......  Now the game plan was to return to Dr. Chen in Aug. and have the root canal and crown...... But I just not sure who to see anymore. I paid Dr. Chen either C10,000 or C20,000 colons for the filling, cleaning and xray....that would be about $40.00 bucks tops...Then I add what Dr. Crook charged me for... $525.00 So I have about $600.00 bucks in a tooth that still needs to be addressed...
