It has been covered before but there is new information on Verizon roaming in CR.

Verizon coverage is now available in CR but you must have a world phone. These phones switch between CDMA and GSM. You have to order a SIM from Verizon and slap it in. The roaming rate is $2.49 a minute. Not cheap but if you are trying to be undercover in CR or just need to be reachable this is now an option.

I personally have a Blackberry 8830 World Edition. You can get Verizon to unlock the thing for use on any network. You just have to sign your life away saying that they are not responsible for the phone working on third party networks. Once you do that they give you the unlock code. I put in my chip from Thailand and tested it. Before the phone was unlocked I got invalid SIM. Now that it is unlocked it comes right up and says registered on the blackberry network. I'm still held by the limitations of the network the SIM is registered to so if they don't have data access I can't get email and such but I can make or receive phone calls.

Thought I share with everyone.

Thanks for the info!
I use Verizon because they have the best coverage in this area (Seattle) & in other places in the US where I travel.

I also have a cheapo pay-as-you-go cell on the Vodaphone network that I use in the UK & Europe.

I was NOT keen on the idea of having to buy another phone to use in CR. I'll just wait until I'm eligible for an upgrade with Verizon & get a world phone!

Now, where can one obtain a sim chip for CR? :?:

I have an 8830 World Phone on Verizon. You get the SIM right at any Verizon store.

But make sure you have them activate Global Roaming on your account or you will have problems.

I still can't send Text messages from CR, but can receive them (have no idea why, neither does Verizon). And I have NO email on my phone, but it's better than the alternatives.

What network do you guys connect to, and what's your service like? Any issues?

If you are in CR you are connecting to ICE. It is the only game in town.

Archie, get them to unlock the phone so you can use any providers SIM. It's free if you bought their SIM.

I will try to do that Spanky.

If I get a CR SIM then it will basically be a CR phone, right? Good for calling within Cr, but expensive for calling the US?

Correct. I carry a cheap unlocked I bought off of Ebay since I really don't want to carry around a $500 phone.
