I know some of you guys use the Skype service. If CR is added this would not be a bad deal at all.

I use Skype and LOVE it. It saved me about $400 on my last Asia trip. And about $150 on my last CR trip.

Great service.

I used the phone option on yahoo messenger and it cost 1 cent per minute. Although yahoo does tend to break up a good bit

I have used Skype and to a lesser extent, yahoo for all my calls out of Costa Rica to other countries ever since moving here almost 2 years ago and have had almost no problems, and true, the person you are calling can not tell where you are calling from. Pheonix Rising also has skype, and he and I talk every few days when he is not here for free. A lot of the internet cafes have it programmed into their computers also. If you do not have a lap top with you and need to make a call, find a cafe that has it, buy a cheap microphone head set, set up an account, pay $10 using a CC, and you are ready to go.

I have a friend who has been showing me the convenience of her Skype. I'm about to get an incoming number with a Miami phone number and a Skype phone so I don't have to always use the headphones. With our crappy phone service here, I expect I will miss less calls as I can either have skype forwarded to my cell phone or set up voice mail.

I know it's been mentioned here before, but in certain situations, a Magic Jack seems fantastic. I've never personally used one to speak to sound quality, but I'm tempted for my travels. It's $40 bucks for year one and $20 bucks a year after, and it's more or less a free regular phone for the US and Canada. All you do is plug it into your USB and plug a normal phone into it and you are set. If you are in Costa Rica, you call the US and Canada for free with your US number, no one knows where you are and I hear it sounds exactly the same on the other side.

Another neat benefit is you can talk to other magic jack users for free anywhere in the world. If you have a girl you want to talk to 5 times a week, get her one (as long as she has a broadband, good luck, although I'm pretty sure it's easy enough where it works in an internet cafe as well, this and a small headset would fit in her purse), and you can talk free all the time.

Obviously, it's not mobile and relies on broadband, but it is a dedicated network.

I don't know how these companies make money, eBay wrote off a lot of the value of Skype and is rumored to be shopping it around, and I know little about Magic Jack, but there's something that will eventually break through. If anyone has any comparisons of Magic Jack to Skype, that would be cool to hear.

Ebay bought Skype because it was the "hot" item of the month in the tech world. They never thought how it would integrate into its core business model. I'm sure some executive lost their job over the purchase. :D

Now, here is a little light reading on Magic Jack.

http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/04/1 ... -says.html

It reveals some of the nasty side of Magic Jack and the fact you are going to deal with ads even when you are paying for the product.
