I tried to find recent prices but couldn't.

Does anbybody know his current price for a root canal and a crown/post?

I read $130 for a root canal, what about a crown?

What's the turnaround time? Can it be done Thursday to Monday?

When I had him do some crowns they were $100.00 but I have heard they are now about $125.00 maybe even a bit more. Thursday to Monday turn around might be tight as they are closed on Sunday. He has his own lab on premises so it might be doable. Why not send him an email schepu@racsa.co.cr or better yet call him at 011-506-2222-0063 or 2233-2703

I don't know about Dr. chen

I however recently used Dr. Marco Cavallini and Dr. Marco Peralta. A fatherand son team of dentists. http://www.aestheticdentistrycr.com/

Their pricelist is on their website. I myself got 3 implants and 21 crowns for 7K.

I highly reccomend them both for their professionalism and prices. Fantastic staff as well.

They probably will be willing to work with your tight timeframe and can pull it off as they have 3 full time lab workers.

Now you have my curiosity up. I wonder if there is any problem with having dental work done in CR using my US dental insurance benefits. Of course I will check with my carrier(Delta Dental) but, I thought I would throw it out for comment. Possibly more bite for my buck.

To replace a metal filling with ceramic filling, 10k colones. Filling a cavity was 10k also. Back upper teeth so about an hours worth of work. 20k total.

I must have got lucky because I made a same day appointment for 12:45 and had a 5 minute wait before sitting in the chair. When I left, the place was full of people waiting in the lobby.

I wonder if that's a gringo price. An amiga had a tooth filled for 8 bucks a year ago.... at a different place though,

I have been going to Dr. Chen for more than 4 years. I know at leat 12 other gringos who use him. Also know a few Tico/a who use him and he has one price for all. In fact he has little concern for money. You have to almost insist he take your payment  I know hard to believe but has happen to me and others I know.

Dental work in CR is about 1/3 the cost in the USA if you go to someone who advertises in the Tico Times. Dr. Chen is about 1/3 the price of those places. Yes you may have to wait and yes it is not a sleek upscale operation but to have an English speaking dentist who practices USA standard sanitation at his prices it is hard to beat.

Go to a dentist you are comfortable with. I get no kickback from Dr. Chen so I have no axe to grind. I am very satisfied with his work and know a bunch of CRT guys who have used him and happily recommend him to others.

He definitely charges one price to all. My Tica gf went there one day (without me) and was charged 10k for a filling. She says she usually pays 5k at her local dentist but I was saying how good he was, so she tried him out. She was happy with the work, but not the price.

But to gringos, I'd still recommend him.

I had Dr. Chen make a night guard for me one year ago which fell apart within the year (that could or could not be related to the quality of work).

Does anybody have any recommendations on other dentists with labs to make night guards?

These night guards costs around $600 in the U.S. and under $100 in Costa Rica.

Thanks,
Harv

Saw him this morning, :D he said appx. 200/corona y 700/implant (I think) and double that if you're from NYC. Dr. Chen is a trip, he must be the most polite man in the world and always so happy to see you.

To my surprise, all my pain has gone away last night and been all good today.

A few days ago, my dentist said that I may need a root canal but I wasn't carzy about paying $1000 (for a root canal & crown), so he gave me antibiotics in case it was just a nerve infection. He told me they would kick in in a few days, so I guess the antibiotics worked.

Here's a muy gringo moment:

That $1000 he wants me to pay is the price WITH insurance. My co-insurance is 40% for major dental work and based on the contracted rates they have with the insurance co. my part is $1000. Which means they get another $1500 from the insurance.

Just out of curiosity, I asked what it would be without insurance, he says $900.   I just looked at him for a second without saying a word to see if he would realize what he just said. When I asked how could that be, he said that cash patients would never pay that much. But since I have insurance I HAVE TO pay according to the contractual rate.

Since he already gets $1500 from the insurance, and cash patients only pay $900, I shouldn't have to pay a dime and should be getting a $600 refund.

I need to find a new dentist. :x

That is crazy- $2500 with insurance (of which you have to pay $1000) or $900 cash. Glad the pain has gone away.

Proly cheaper and much less hassle to just forget about using the DD benefits. You can check their schedules but always always have to pay something out of pocket. Last root canal and crown I had here US easily set me back $800 even with insurance.
