Hi Guys, I've just gotten back from a trip to Prague and the weak dollar makes for a hell of an expensive trip for both mongering and food/drink. I haven't been back to CR since September but are the regulars seeing any upward movement on prices when paying by dollar? Are the chicas realizing that our currency has lost a bit of its luster? Just interested to see if our economic woes are translating into higher prices in Latin America. |

The dollar dropped about 5% a while back and continues to go up and down by 1 or 2 colones every week. At the same time everything here seemed to go up about 10%, including most of the MPs, resturants, (BK, McDonals, KFC, et. are higher here than in the states) the indepentants (REY, SL,etc.) seem to be going up continually. The more gringos seem willing to pay, the more they ask. |

Cost of living has been sky rocketing in Costa Rica the past 4 months. The dollar continues to weaken against the colon dropping just over 5% in just 3 months while inflations runs almost 1% per month. Just a real simple example. Bananas a locally grown product were always priced a 19 colones per banana at Mas x Menos. 3 weeks ago the price was 20 colones, 2 weeks ago the price was 21 colones, last week it was 22 and this week it is 23 colones. While 4 colones is not a large amount you have to understand that is 21% increase on a local product. Eggs, again a local product, doubled in two months. There appears to be no end in sight as at the moment as there is a constant rumor the central bank is poised to up the value of colon against the dollar shortly. |
