Leaving SJO, you can take the 4 btls you buy in duty free as you leave (Duty Free shop delivers to you as you are boarding the flight). Once you arrive in the US, you will have to repack to checked luggage after you clear Customs, if you are continuing your flight.

You also have to remember that anything over 2 liters is subject to having to pay duty. From U.S. Customs "Know before you go"

Quote:
$800 Exemption
If you are arriving from anywhere other than a U.S.
insular possession (U.S. Virgin Islands, American
Samoa, or Guam) you may bring back $800 worth of
items duty free, as long as you bring them with you.
This is called accompanied baggage.
For Caribbean Basin or Andean countries, your exemption
is also $800. These countries include:
Antigua and Barbuda Guatemala
Aruba Guyana
Bahamas Haiti
Barbados Honduras
Belize Jamaica
Bolivia Montserrat
British Virgin Islands Netherlands Antilles
Colombia Nicaragua
Costa Rica Panama
Dominica Peru
Dominican Republic Saint Kitts and Nevis
Ecuador Saint Lucia
El Salvador Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Grenada Trinidad and Tobago
You may include two liters of alcoholic beverages with
this $800 exemption, as long as one of the liters was
produced in one of the countries listed above
(see section
on Sending Purchases from Insular Possessions
and Caribbean Basin or Andean Countries).

If you do not declare any amount over the 2 liters and customs finds them they usually seize them.

Good recap of the customs reg on booze.

I carry about 1/2 case of beer for a friend who collects cans and buy 3 750 ml of booze. To date, I have not been searched. I usually arrive in the evening in the airport. When I fly Delta through Atlanta, the Customs cashier is closed.

I chatted with a customs inspector one time and he told me that each inspector is permitted approximately a 10% leeway on booze. In other words, around 3-750 ml bottles fits within the guidelines.

Hope this helps.
