My opinion. Travelers checks are an anachronism, no longer viable in our modern, electronic world. I strongly recommend a mix of cash, atm, and credit cards. The mix would depend on the country, and you should have specific cards with low limits and full protection for international usage.
Travelers checks are a pain in the butt, and are irritatingly more difficult to cash in places where only cash is accepted.
One notable exception would be a large payment, planned in advance, to a party that accepts travelers checks (i.e. you're not trying to cash the checks overseas, you are actually paying someone with them).
