Post subject:  Exchange rate dropped?

I went to SL this afternoon to exchange $100 and was told that the rate dropped about 20 colones per dollar this morning. I was told the bank rate is 495¢, and I was given 490¢.

When I went to the CR central bank website, they still show 516¢ per dollar.

Did I get screwed out of $4? :? :? :?

Looks like it did drop around .20 colones yesterday according to one site but that's .20 not 20 so to answer your question Orange- muy tico! :D Or maybe they just had to make up for the cheap bastards complaining about the price of turkey dinner. (just kidding no hate mail please) Either way that's a not a very good rate and why I hit the bank at the airport upon arrival, the Pres. rate is usually 510.

As the business day opened most banks and money exchange houses offered rates that were around 495 for purchasing dollars and around 500 to 505 colons for the sale of dollars.

You can't expect the websites to be updated that quickly, give them a few days. They all still say 516-519. But the local papers have picked up on it obviously. I was told the bank rate is 495.

Banco Cuscatlan is at 496.7 as of this morning. Wow the dollar is now losing ground even here, that really sucks for those of us bringing dollars into CR.

Saw a cartoon in USA TODAY this morning.....A little girl sitting upon the lap of Santa Claus telling him what she wants for Christmas......"skip the lead tainted toys from China and just leave me cash...preferably in euros."

Not to get political but AM Costa Rica says "The reason for the devaluation is the weakening of the dollar all over the world due to the U.S. financial troubles and the war in Iraq." Thanks GWB! :x

I'm a dumb shit because I was going to exchange all my dollars at the airport when I came here on Wednesday but of course I forgot. So I've been changing $100 at a time. Soy tonto!

Well I could told all you it was about to drop...how do I know, cause I leave for CR a week from tonight, thats how.

Anyone want to know what stocks going to shoot up? The one I sold yesterday. What stocks going down? Yep the one I bought this morning.

Im physic I tell ya.

Screw it, the dollar is buying less here too...still better to spend it CR I'll bet! Besides a great opportunity to unload dollars that are going to be worth less for some valuable memories.

Post subject:  any change with cien

seems to me that so long as cien remains the starting point, a 5% currency change isn't going to make a difference (in the DR anyway). Has anyone noticed any change in dollar-based negotiations?

Seems to make sense that the exchange rate would change so much now, being that it's starting the main tourist season, and of course the dollar is taking a beating all over the world, about time Costa Rica got in on the action. Hey, the exchange rate is still better than what it was on my trip #1 (420-425 to $1). I won't bitch until it get's down to 400 to 1. Of course some of the old timers on here remember when the exchange rate was like 250 to $1.

My guess would be that you got more for your 250 colones or 1 dollar back in those days??

1 banana = 10 colones....you get 49-50 bananas a dollar

if 1 banana = 100 colones you only get about 5 bananas for your dollar.

Confusion say: cost o banana more importante than xchangee rate
