I know there is a bank upstairs but I don't know exactly where. By what gate is it, or is it in the departure area upstairs? Is there a line usually?

Bank is at the north end of the terminal in the area where the ticket counters are located. The north end is the first set of doors when you come to the terminal. The south end is where the immigration and security, that you pass through to get to the departure gates, is located.

Have never used the bank so have info on how busy they are.

I have spent many a time in SJO. There are several ATM locations, but I don't believe there is a full service bank. There is a semi service BAC SJ on the right side as you enter. They have an ATM and Credomatic machine. If you pass to the parking lot, there is another ATM on your left. There are also a few exchange stands in the airport itself.

If you feel "risky", there are countless idiots hanging around the parking lot. For a small fee, they will take your card and pin, and go to a different bank closeby, for a promised return plus propina. I don't recommend this option.

I always use the BAC at the airport after I land. I get my luggage and go out give my luggage to my driver and go upstairs to the departure area and make a right. It is right past the desks where you pay the departure tax and never more than one person ahead of me if that. Now I do have a driver I trust so do not have to worry about my luggage and he picks me up when I come out.
