Yes this is a post about C.R. cockroaches. No it is not a bash on the C.R. Cockroaches thrive everywhere but where I saw these is both disgusting and hilarious. MegaSuper next to the Best Western Irazu last Fri. Went in to complete my first day provisions run (chocolate, chips, Imperial, Bavaria, Bavaria light etc.) and then when I went to select a fine Costan Rican pastry what did I see scampering right across the pastry? The always elusive never will be extinct (even after nuclear war) cockroach!!!! Couldn't believe that the pastry bins were so wide open air and that I saw a live one crawling right thru. Slender and long. They must not be exterminating in there. Also saw another one in another section of the store. That particular store may be having financial difficulties or cutting costs (pest treatment) where they shouldn't be. Never seen this anywhere in my 6 visits to C.R., 6 other visits to Latin America or elsewhere in the world. Sure I can find in America also. Again not a bust on the C.R. but definetely a bust on this particular store. Visited a small local store in Barva same trip with open pastry bins but did not see any little ones there. Just wanted to inform everyone to check the pastry bins out before buying anything. Pre-packaged or from a local bakery with live attendant best. There was no attendant in the pastry section there. |

No doubt, that cockroach was prabably big enough to walk off with a pastry.  They get pretty big down there. I often see them scurrying along the sidewalk. Last June/July I was sitting in one of our favorite San Jose restaurants....my friend sitting across from me told me to turn and face the wall.....a cockroach was climbing the wall right beside, and ducked in behind a picture hanging on the wall.  I wasn't hungry after that.

On my trip last month my buddies and I ventured down to Costa Del Sol restaurant to have dinner. While waiting for our food a couple of hungry roach's decided to crawl out of the wall and join us. Fortunately they gave up and moved on by the time the food was served. Firedude |

Cockroaches are one of the cleanest insects in nature. In fact that is their role in nature, they are in fact cleaners. Flies on the other hand, digest their food by puking their digestive acids on virtually everything they land on. Flies are about the most disgusting creatures in all of nature. I don't worry about cockroaches. Please, please, please, keep the flies out of my food. |

I was crossing teh street in front of SL one night over Labor Day when another monster charged me. Seriously, he came straight for me from 10' away. All I had to do was lift my boot and wait...CRUNCH! Be cautious when you crunch. Those little devils are so centered on survival that somehow when stepped on their eggs can attach to your soles of your shoe. |

On my first trip, I stayed at Hotel Morazan; on returning to my room one night, I saw a huge roach on one of the lampshades when I turned the light on. Thankfully have not had the same experience since I started making the Castillo my home away from home... |

Yes, they grow em big down there. I think maybe it is more prevalent because of the constantly humid atmosphere. I have seen them numerous times in my casa in Cartago. I have shopped numerous times at the mercado central in Cartago. What is really disgusting are the guys who sell the meat, chicken, fish etc... No gloves. They just grab it, lay it out on the bacteria infested scale, pick it up and put it in plastic bag. This is one time when I do not like having my meat barebacked.

Tossed it out & there was another one there next day! |

For the residents down here, a good, non insecticide way to deal with them is to use powdered boric acid (acido borico at any farmacia). What I do is sprinkle it under the microwave, and leave it in jar lids in the cupboards. We see a few roaches wandering around the apartment from time to time, but not too often now that the acid is there. They walk in it and die. It's not really dangerous (the acid) to adults, but you might be careful if there are K*ds around. I don't care to cropdust my place with Raid, so I like the solution. |
