I have been out of touch with CRT the past 10 days so if this has been posted previously I apologize.

Before the "fire storm" of sentiment either way gets started this is meant to support the troops not express an opinion either way about the war.

"Something cool that Xerox is doing

If you go to this web site, http://www.letssaythanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq . You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! This is a great site. Please send a card. It is FREE and it only takes a second.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our guys and gals over there need to know we are behind them.

Take a minute to send a card and then forward to as many people as you can!"

I disagree...it is not a political post...it is supporting our fellow citizens...regardless of one's view on politics and/or the war. If men and women did not volunteer for service we would probably not be speaking English either here or in England.

I have opposed the War in Iraq from the start, but just sent a card. Supporting our troops is not political.

I could say a lot more about what is happening; but, in the spirit of the board, will refrain.

Jprimm:

if I may express another opinion: our soldiers are in Iraq because they volunteered. They volunteered to serve their country whether they approved of the assignment or not. That's a soldiers job. The military is not a democracy you don't get to decide what you're going to do and what you're not going to do.

First I honor your right to say this. This is one of the greatest items that we Americans can enjoy. The right of free speech.

A a vetern of Viet Nam my take on this; hate the message, don't hate the messenger.

Health & happiness to all

There are a lot of ways you can show your support/sympathy. I would say donating to the USO would be one good way. I haven't looked deeply into it but I believe there are ways to send an actual letter rather than an automated card. I hear there are organizations that allow you to buy prepaid phone cards so they can call home.

As a complete aside... in my early days I saw a small truck that said 'USO OFFICIAL.' I wondered what a USO Official would be doing in Costa Rica. It finally struck me that it was simply Spanish for 'official use.' Duh.

The sentiment is in the right place. I do get a little uncomfortable with how some of the pro-war people confuse the issue of supporting the troops and supporting the war.

I also disagree with the notion that our volunteer military shoulders part of the blame for the war. They do not set policy. Their job is to follow orders.

But if you really want to support the troops, forget sending a card.

Write and/or call your congressman and insist that these brave men and women are going to have their full VA benefits when they return. The government is doing a terrible job of taking care of our troops when they come home. The VA hospital system is a joke and the government has cut back on the GI bill education benefits. With all the troops that are returning with disabilities, we need to make sure that these fine people are not going to end up on the streets begging for spare change.

Sending cards is a nice gesture for sure. But we need to do more.

I sent the card, even though I couldn't see the designs.

Sadly, the message I wanted was missing:

We support you, even though we strongly disagree with such criminal use of our troops in what we feel is essentially the worst strategic move in the history of the United States. An outside army can never win a civil war in another's country, even though our destabilization of that country has promoted the civil war there." There was also no message reading "WMD my ass!"

So I just settled on "Hugs and cheer from home."
:D

BTW, I now have a nephew who's in the Special Forces in Iraq. The Army certainly has reprogrammed him. And I'm quite serious. No offense to anyone else who has likewise been programmed.

Thanks Irish Drifter! :)

I just learned that one in eight veterans under 65 are uninsured. The VA in January 2003 ordered a halt to the enrollment of most veterans who are not poor. The move was designed to reduce the backlog of patients waiting for care. As a result, veterans now making as little as about $24,000 a year in some regions do not qualify for health coverage from the VA.

This is ridiculous. Whether one is for or against military actions, these brave and noble people deserve every benefit a just government can provide. Thanks both of you for posting these. :D
