Fine Proposed For Making Anti-Foreigner Jokes and Commentaries
From the strange but true department, legislator Alexander Mora of the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) has presented a proposed law that would sanction Costa Ricans for making jokes or offensive commentaries to foreigners.
According to Mora, in the long run, the initiative would better Costa Rican society, learning to respect the rights of immigrants.
Asked if his initiative that would create controversy as it would punish xenophobia and anti-foreigner has any future possibility of passing, Mora, did not give any specifics, saying however that the law is needed to reduce the current violent society that is being created.
Mora added that the inspiration for the law came when he began receiving text messages on his cellular phone that put down immigrants with jokes about foreigners, especially about Nicaraguans.
The proposal pretends to fine between 10 and 50 days pay for a first offence and increased to 15 to 65 days for repeated offences, that can be up to ¢300.000 colones.
Mora added that the changes proposed will not change things overnight, but would begin to sensitize Costa Ricans of the problems faced by foreigners. At the very least, the proposal, will open discussion on the subejct and make everyone conscious that we need to change if we want a peaceful society, according to Mora.
