KC- after seeing that list I will continue to feel safe in my visits to the gulch. I will not be spending much time in vehicles nor swimming, overdosing or feeling depressed.
But there were a couple of homicides on there.........I suppose a good pi may be a prudent investment. :D 8)

So this means that the perps are holding their victems underwater, throwing them in front of cars and pushing them down steps....right?

I never would have guessed that suicides would make up such a high percentage of that list. Perhaps Costa Rica is such a paradise that some people can't imagine life back home after leaving.

You gotta love the US State dept not being able to spare a couple extra words after some of the descriptions, like "other accident" or "natural disaster".

I don't find the suicide rate that surprising.

Someone with depression leaves the US behind for paradise. They get to paradise and they find their depression is just as bad as before. So what is left?

Keep in mind these figures are for expats as well as visitors.

A very good point. I see lots of expats who are searching for something, though they don't know what. Almost by definition, guys who come to live here don't have a lot of family ties, or other ties. Living in a foreign country and in a foreign culture doesn't lessen the isolation. If your only problem back home was lack of pu*sy, then moving here solves your problem. I see lots of expats wandering around the gulch whose main hobby is drinking. I hear guys talking about moving to Thailand or the Phils. or Colombia or Nicaragua as if THAT is the magic bullet. I don't say that Thailand or Nicaragua don't have their good points, but really, if you can't find a girl here, perhaps the problem is YOU and not your location?

Sometimes you're better off having something to blame for your misery, rather than directing it inward. If you live in paradise and still can't find the blue-toucan of happiness, what hope is left?

I agree with Bilko,

I see a lot of guys drinking themselves to death down here. Unhappy that this was not Paradise on Earth and lonely and miserable. Probably the same in any expat community. No expert but probably a recipe for higher suicide rate.

I wonder what they consider to be suicide :?

Would it be considered suicide to be old and overweight and die while having sex with multiple 20 yo chicas at once

Bilko touched on it, but I think it is actually a lot worse to live in paradise when you have depression problems. What do you do when all of your excuses for being miserable are taken away? Then you add cheap beer and cheap drugs to the mix and it is not a good situation.

I lived in Hawaii for a long time. There, they have come up with a thing they call "island fever". What a bunch of bunk! It is just an excuse for being miserable that doesn't involve any accountability.

I see a lot of guys who come down there to live. Some are doing well. Others, especially the younger ones, not so much.

There are a lot of guys down here who have warrants in the U.S. There are also a significant number of guys and gals who either had drug problems before or developed them here. And then there are the guys who try to start businesses down here and lose everything (seen that happen more than once, and I'm only a tourist). I can imagine that the shine of Costa Rica wears off pretty quickly for guys living down there. Just goes to show that you can't run from your problems.
