The main commercial street runs East-West from the Sabana Park a few miles West of downtown into the heart of the city and becomes the Central Avenue walking street.

To give you an idea of distance/scale, you can walk from the Presidente to the area of the Paseo Colon MPs in about 20 minutes

From Hotel Del Rey - find the Monkey Bar across the street and continue down the hill one block - you will meet paseo colon at the next intersection. Turn right one block, and you'll find yourself in front of Hotel Presidente and it's American style News Cafe. It is open-air that opens on Paseo Colon, continue straight ahead for several blocks and you'll walk straight thru down town. I've made the hike without a wingman from HDR to Presidente ALL hours of the day and night without incident, except being frequently accosted by pan handlers and all variety of beggars. Most of Paseo Colon is a walking boulevard used by all. Try as I might, I always get pegged as a Yankee Gringo with 3 seconds everywhere I went. While I walk from HDR to Presidente at any hour, there are areas Gringos need to avoid on foot after dark. Use good judgement, as you would in any big city.

Sorry Johnny that is not Paseo Colon. That is Avenida Central which becomes Paseo Colon at Hospital San Juan Dios, (calle 14)

The Paseo Colon area Barrio) of San Jose is the area bordered on the north by Ave 3, on the south by Ave San Martin (Ave 10), on the east by calle Pasteur (calle 14) and on the west by calle 42 (Sabana park).

Avenida Central (paseo colon) runs east-west thru this area from down town. And several of the better massage parlars (Oasis, Saphires,
VIPS, Verionicas, Kama sutra) are located in this area.
