Yes you need to speak Spanish

If you talk to a chica in English where do you think she learned her English? :?

Chances are it wasn't in a school :o

No my friend it was in a bar talking to another Gringo like yourself

We all know what they do with us Gringos right or better yet what we do to them.

Then think about it: How long does it take to learn another language :?:

In my opinion to converse effectively one has to spend a lot of time practicing.

So what would you prefer :?:

Yourself spending a lot of time learning Spanish at home or in a school to talk with a "fresh" chica in her language. :)

-OR-

Hooking up with an old "been around the block chica" that speaks English because she spent years with gringos like us.

If you are not able to have a conversation with the chica then your missing out on half of the fun. It's difficult to learn a language when you get older but not impossible. If you put a little effort into it you'll be surprised at what you can do.Buena Suerte Hombres!

Eight weeks at three hours a day in school will do it if your willing to put in the quality study time along with a lot of practice. And it is WELL worth the time/money/effort. Sharing more than a load with a tica is very rewarding with the right ones...

Having just returned from my first foray into the wilds of CR, I'd have to agree, my biggest regret is not knowing more of the language. That problem will be cured by my second visit.

I have spent a LOT of time learning Spanish and I feel it is time well spent, since I live here. One LITTLE quibble, though. Don't assume that girls who don't speak any English are somehow 'fresh.' Lots of the old shopworn pros still don't speak any English, other than numbers. But you CAN increase your prospects immensely and will be able to conduct a decent 'interview' by learning Spanish.

One other thing, though. It takes more than a few hours to learn any foreign language. I took 2 semesters in college (recently) and have lived here and practiced for 2 and a half years. I can express myself pretty well, I think, but I still have a Hell of a time understanding normal conversation, especially among the poorer classes. I don't want to discourage anybody, but you may not be able to master the language as quickly as you think. It's worth the effort, but it's not any walk in the park either (in my experience).

I know you mean well and are voicing the advantage of being bilingual but your statement that "You need to learn spanish" is a relative broad stroke of the brush. Indeed, it is an advantage for anyone to know a secondary language if they require the use of it often. I'm about to ruffle some feather here BUT!

In my opinion, actual learning of the language is not something a person needs to spend 6, 8, 12 weeks on doing if they only travel to a latin country one or two times a year. For one thing, they will not retain the ability to have a semi-decent conversation unless they conitnuously practice. Another is, unless someone plans to live in a spanish speaking country, is able to make many trips each year or is seeking the girfriend-novia repeated experience, it is not an advantage considering the time it consumes to speak that language.

For the seldom traveled gringo that just wants to bed a few chicas during his 3 to 7 day fling....he needs only the dinero and about 100 or so words of the language. How to ask her name, directions, where is the shit can, count to twenty in espanol, tips and courtesy, a simple assortment of: too much, how, where, when, stop, again, thank you, no more and the preverbial.....Taxi driver, take me to calle or the name of the place and how much?

If that hombre is mute and cannot speak, but has greenbacks, he will probably still get laid as often as the one or two trip vocal enhanced traveler when it comes to the pro-chicas. He just won't get a word in edgewise.

Although I have traveled to many countries, I have been in some, disregarding latino places, that I did not know but maybe ten words of their language if that. I survived, I had a good time and I sought out the people, expats, and locals that knew the language well enough to aid me in having a fun and safe trip.

Unless a person enjoys and has the time to learn a particular language it is not a requirement. A help and advantage yes but it's not something that will handicap the sometime traveler all that much. If you feel that way then keep your ass at home. Just my opinion but then I could give a shit anyway.

Never did learn how to speak pig latin......but I scored a few in yonder years.

Another option is to attach yourself to a wingman who is conversant in Spanish. Although my own Spanish is flawed after having fallen into disuse, I can still communicate well enough, ususally. On many occasions, I have translated for my CRT pals. However, problems can come up. Don't tell HolaB, but his beach date with Anna may not go as planned. If she shows up with to his room with a peccary and a midget (instead of a suitcase with beach items), I will just have to plead the quinta enmienda.

Circus your right about having fun either way. I would say if your going multiple times a year it is worth your time to learn the language at least a little. Also to learn a language is no easy task when you get older but it can be done.If your just going twice a year don't spend too much time learning the lingo. For me i'm so addicted to chicas that the effort put into learning the language makes the expierence a lot better. It also will help you if you decide to go to other spots(Mde,Lima,Argentina)where English is not spoken. (as much as it is in CR).Everyone has a different playbook for working these chicas. This forum is allways giving me ideas to improve my chances of having a good time.Gracias a todos!

I just wanted to add something that frustrates me. You ever notice how when you tell a chica to speak slowly because you don't speak Spanish well they seem to talk faster? It's like, "hey 'stupid', I'm still just about as poor a Spanish speaker as I was five minutes ago when I asked you to speak slowly so I understand."

The title of this thread is totally misleading.

You don't NEED to speak Spanish to get by. I've met tons of guys who spoke about 10 words and they didn't miss a beat. It does help to be able to communicate with them on a higher level than "hi, what's your name? how much?".

I agree with you. This entire experience can be about enriching yourself and opening doors and your eyes, unless of course you are just a slug that cares about nothing but screwing girls and leaving it at that. If you want to learn the languages, it's worth it. But it won't improve the pure mongering experience all that much imo. Even speaking no Spanish you can have a hell of a great time in SJO. In Brazil you can rock and roll without any Portuguese. It's all a question of what you want to do with it.

On another board an American who speaks fluent German outright said he would not even bother going to FKKs if he couldn't speak German because the experience is so much better conversing with the girls. Fact is only about a third of the girls at FKKs speak German anyway. I got my world rocked in SJO speaking zero Spanish, in Brazil speaking zero Portuguese, and in Germany speaking almost zero German. If you really can speak fluently to these girls you'd probably realize they have no depth and don't think about anything beyond tomorrow. I think that would ruin it for me.

Many times it's better to NOT speak the language......cuts back on the RFMs, etc.

I'm one of those "hundred words or less" guys, and I get along fine. With the little bit of Spanish I know, and the little bit of English the chica knows, and all the sign language in between......we get the job done. :)

Obviously, knowing the language is a benefit. If you are only going to be here fro a few days and hang at DR, KL SL and ZB you will be fine with little or no Spanish. There are a lot of guys who live here with no Spanish. Mine was non-existant a year ago and I managed with no real problems. I now can carry on basic conversations and communicate all the basics. It makes my ability to venture out further much better. I am still planning on becoming as fluent as possible but I want to make sure no one is scared to come here without Spanish.
