Nokia Recalls Batteries; Possible Recall on 3G Phones

If you are the owner of a Nokia cellular phone, the world's largest maker of mobile phones has recalled some 46 million batteries used in its phones that contain a fault tat could lead to overheating, following the report of 100 incidents.

Nokia said the advisory is on its BL-5C battery produced by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co., a unit of Matsushita, between December 2005 and November 2006. The battery is found in models ranging from the basic 1100 to the advanced E50.

Nokia said it has several suppliers for that line of batteries, and the advisory only applies to the 46 million made by Matsushita during that time period. There have been about 100 incidents globally and no injuries or product damage, Nokia said. Nokia didn't estimate financial damage from the recall, or to what degree such costs would be split with Matsushita.

In an unrelated problem, Nokia may have to recall millions of cellular phones due to a software glitch that renders them inoperable with the third-generation networks. The 3G network is not yet available in Costa Rica, though 3G phones can be used on the current GSM network.

Nokia maintains that it can resolve the problem with a software patch in the network infrastructure, which would avoid a recall. Nokia says the problem, which it discovered last week, stems from the approach it took in developing its second-generation phones operating on the Code Division Multiple Access protocol. That approach makes them inoperable with the 3G networks.
