You can get a computerized eye exam and a basic pair of frame and lenses at Optica Vision for a little less than $20.00.

Prices escalate as you upgrade frames and go to transition lenses and stuff like that.

Thanks for the info ID. What is the nearest location to the gulch?

I was going to do a search on this very topic. I need to replace the lenses in my glasses. The fuckers here want $130 for only the lenses plus $75 for an exam.

Also, are Acuvue disposable contacts available and would anybody know the prices?

Optica Visions are literally everywhere in San Jose. Last I knew there were about 20 scattered all over. I know there is one on calle 3, avenida C y 1 and their is one on avenida central near the post office. There are at least 2 other on avenida 1 and 2 more near the post office and most likely others.

Contact lenses are available not sure of brands or prices.

There is an optical place in the pharmacia on the corner across from the Morazan, I got a quote last trip and it was about half what they cost here in the states but he didn't do glass lenses only plastic. There's also a place in the mini-mall across from the Presidente on the ground floor across from the ATM's, I'm not sure if either of them do the exams or just sell glasses.

Brand name frames looked expensive to me. Armani is probably the same price. How much are hi Index lenses?

Not a typo. Ask for the special, they always have one, it includes the exam, a selection of 3 or 4 different frames and plastic lenses either mono or bi-focal.
Last time I bought there, about 2 years ago, the price was $17.50 all in.

I believe the place in the mini-mall is an Optica Vision. All OV stores have an optometrist in the store who does the exam. Not all stores have someone who can speak English.

I also took the time to get a new pair of glasses at Optica Alpina which is in the pharmacy next to the Hotel Morazon. I was able to get an eye exam and progressive, transitional lenses for a total of $163 and they were ready in 16 hours. I am very satisfied with the results.

I think I would be a little skeptical about those low prices for glasses. Frame.s in Costa Rica are high...at least for those that I like. One man's bargain is another man's junk. I have purchased at least 8 pair of glasses from Optivision and have never heard of the special talked about...doesn't mean it doesn't exsist but I wouldn't buy glasses at Kaiser....let alone $17 from Optivision. Once they needed five tries to get it right..yes five...but they stood by their work. If I were in the states and coming here I would GO TO COSTCO AND BUY MY FRAMES...PERIOD. You will do better than here. I just priced single vision polorized sun glasses yesterday....lenses were qouted at 39000 colones. You might get darker glass in the states.
Dental work...jump on a plane. Glasses, I have never heard of anyone saving money here.
