Went into this store in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles called BEVMO (Beverages and More) and they had 6-Packs (bottled) of Imperial beer from Costa Rica.....just an FYI.

Apparently it is also distributed in parts of Arizona, Florida and New York.

My first several trips I was enamoured with Imperial. Thought it was the greatest beer ever brewed. Then, all of a sudden, it just didn't appeal to me. I used to bring some back from every trip. Now I bring back Pilsen. But, it is cool to know it is available here in the USA. I wish I could find some Presidente. My new "best beer ever brewed" beer.

Presidente is pretty darn good, and it is readily available in the Bahamas where I used to live. If you get a chance try Cerveza Gallo in Guatemala. IMHO it is the best beer in Central America.

Hey…wait a minute…I like Imperial  !!! That first one I drink (chug?) tells me I’m in CR again :D … clean, slightly crisp and well balanced.

Just a word of warning to anyone buying it in the states… most likely it has been shipped by container ship through a warm climate… and then sits in a warehouse until somebody can sell it to sit on a shelf for a while…chances are the quality will be not nearly what you remember from CR… Beer does not travel well, the best is always locally brewed.

Mendo, I concur.

I tried to bring a can with my checked luggage, and it developed a pin hole leak all over my suitcase. Dare I pack a glass bottle?

I like the beer and have done a side by side taste test with Bud and Imperial was a clear winner.

Do not miss the photos:

Of course! :D Just wrap them in a pair of jeans… I can get a six pack per pair. When wrapping beer into checked luggage you need to watch what you wrap it in… the crowns (caps) have fairly sharp edges and with the movement in transit can cut up lighter materials… I trashed a few golf shirts that way in my beer biz days. Need to watch your total weight of the suitcase…the heavier they are the more they tend to throw them around it seems. :?

You ever wonder why I carry wine to CR (other than the obvious “there is no good wine in CR”)…because I carry a bottle of Rum back for every bottle of wine I take…. 7 last trip  :D . Glass bottles are made to take a little shipping/travel abuse.

OK…so do the tips on how to pack beer/booze make it to the infamous “Aces List”?

I have always been able to get the 12 ouncers back without issue. I wrap them up really well in my clothes. However, last trip I brought back the larger size. When AA finally delivered my suitcase to my house I found that 2 bottles were completely trashed and my suitcase ripped from the glass. So, I opened up a suitcase to be greeted by about half a gallon of spilled beer soaked up by various pairs of underwear, socks, shorts etc...

Albertsons super markets in Southern Cal have been selling Imperial for the last six months. Most of the Bars in Newport Beach have it on Tap!

I loved it when I came on vacation. But you learn pretty soon that it is pretty bad beer. Doesn't taste bad, but has lots of impurities from the water used. It gives one of the nastiest hangovers I've dealt with.
