Post subject:  Pedestrian Walkway Question

I seem to remember stories about a new pedestrian walkway being constructed that was going to run parallel to the existing walkway but on the other side of the main avenue running past the national theatre.

has this project gotten underway or been completed?

I watched the ticos doing the brick work on the walkway in June. They are quite talented.

Of course, the first thing they had to do, was to tear up the old street and sidewalk. This left many "hazards" for the pedestrians who still continued to walk down the street [holes, manhole covers sticking up, pipes exposed, deep ditches, etc]. The ticos walked down the street in typical "business as usual" fashion. Now that's something you wouldn't see in the U.S.

Last I heard was that the construction had stopped. A bulk of the financing for the project, as well as some other planned walkways, was being provided by Taiwan. When CR broke relations with them they cut off the funding.

I have not been in that area for awhile so perhaps the construction has started up again. Not sure about that though.

what is the status of the new pedestrian walkway now in mid October?

and, in general, what sort of redevelopment is going on in the area of the new walkway?

I never knew what the former area of where the existing walkway was like.

it seems to me that new stores, maybe whole new buildings and the like will follow the completion of this new walkway.

any updates/thoughts?

just curious.

I am in that area alot and the construction is ongoing. Nice brickwork with the storm drain in the center .

I do not think there are any redevelopment plans. It will be nice but it is not the nicest area of town. OK during the day but a no no at night.

I wish they would have done it on the north side of town , so a guy could walk without choking on the fumes. But I guess those streets are major traffic arteries.

The walkway itself is coming along, and it's pretty nice. I think the idea wasn't to build the walkway in a 'nice' area but rather that the walkway would be an improvement that would act as a 'magnet' to stimulate more business and eventually attract more and better businesses along it.

I don't think it's a bad area now, but it's definitely not as nice as the Av. 0 walkway. Still, that walkway has been there a long time, and I suspect it wasn't as 'nice' as it is today when it first came to be. If I had money and was going to live long enough, I'd buy out a few of the lower rent businesses on the new walkway. We may lose Bar Camelot though...
