It was reported in the news this morning that Mel Gibson met with the Costa Rican president on Monday to discuss making a donation to help the country's native indians.

Gibson also acknowledged to reporters that he has bought a house in Guanacaste.

I was going to post the same thing!  I wonder how long it will take Mel to pull his hair out dealing with all the palms extended to him wanting some $$$$$? Once they get a little they will be back for more :? count on it! Remember those poor Indians have very sick & have very extended families. Once you show you have a soft heart that's when the flies find the shit.

I believe it would have been wiser to make a less obvious entrance into CR for piece of mind for him. He seems to like little ones so maybe the last name of "Gibson" will be as common in Spanish as "Rodriquez" :) ?

I wasn't aware that Costa Rica had a sizable indigenous population. Anyone know what part of the country they are typically located in?

Costa Rica has a smaller indigenous population than other Central American countries but there are still reserves you can find on a decent map. The ones I know of are in the southeast, on the Caribbean side, in the hills above Puerto Viejo for example.

The Indigenous population totals approximately 65,000 which is about 1.5% of the total population. The Chorotega live on the Nicoya Peninsula and the Huetar live around Puriscal. The Bribri, Cabecares, Borucas, Teribes, Guaymies and Maleku live in the Talamanca Mountains near Puerto Viejo.

Though well intentioned, Mel may not be up to speed as to how things work in Costa Rica. I certainly hope the money is used for what it is intended, but unfortunately, I remain skeptical it will be.

The money may very well have been put to better use, by Mel treating all of us at Zona Blue and New Fantasy. :P
