These guys are so good at breaking balls and so lousy at giving information...with the exception of Paco Loco.
Look Terminator, there isn't really much to "see" in San Jose. Most non-whoremongering tourists use San Jose as a starting and ending point for adventures outside the city. However, here's a short list:
Museums: Not great, but the National Theater is worth a visit, as is the Metropolitan Cathedral. The Gold Museum and Jade Museum are okay, but grotesquely overpriced for tourists. ($12.00 p.p. the time I visited the Gold Museum last year).
Bolivar Zoo: This may be the dirtiest and most depressing zoo on the planet. Take plenty of photos to enrage your PETA pals back home.
Shopping: You'd do better at home, but the crafts market near Morazan Park is pretty cool. Look for a guy named Santiago who sells pan pipes for around U.S. $10.00. He makes them by hand and tunes them to perfect pitch using an electronic tuner in the ancient indigenous tradition. Shopping at San Pedro mall is a lot like shopping in the U.S.
There are several day trips possible from San Jose, including the Lancaster Gardens, La Paz Waterfall park, coffee plantation tours, cigar factory tour, half-day ATV trips and the like. Your hotel tours desk will be happy to sell you a tour at a premium price.
The Del Rey Zoo: Much less depressing than the Bolivar Zoo, this garden of animal life includes rare species such as the Rubber Breasted Colombiana, the dark skinned Dominicana, and the Jardend Crakjo (pronounced "Hardened Crack Ho). Entrance fees can be steep, around U.S. $100.00 for an hour visit; this price is rarely paid by returning visitors. The wildlife outside the zoo, particularly at the Key Largo Game Preserve and the Parque Morazan Gay Reserve can be very entertaining. Watch out for the Nimble Fingered Paint-Huffing Ten Year-Old, an amazingly common species.
The city has some nice architecture, particularly around Barrio Amon. A visit to the monuments at the Sportsmen's Lodge is a must-do...talk about some nice flying buttresses...
