I found this article about "Third World" Countries very interesting. While Costa Rica is never mentioned many things written about I have observed in CR. I think it is worth a read.

Interesting article.

That's what I love about the net... a plethora of info you can share with others.

Quote:
In the Third World there is a different attitude to commerce. An American businessman is likely to give a new client a good price, or at least the going price, in hopes of acquiring him as a regular customer. If in the Third World a European gets a haircut without asking the price, he will be charged eight dollars when the correct price is four dollars. He will never come back.

This is normal third-world economics—gouge the customer to the max without thought of the future.
So true, that has bothered me often!!

Thanks ID it was a fun read. Fred is not only funny but more than politically correct.

As hard as it is for us Gringos to truly understand how we all can be like this, it does pay us to pay attention. We are all made of pretty much the same basic cellular material but our environment really does mold us at an early age more than we want to realize.

Hopefully you subscribed to his column. He really writes some interesting down to earth stuff. May not always agree with his take on a subject but certainly worth listening to his opinion. Really hits home that he is an ex-pat married to a local.

I guessed the same, as many of his articles deal with gringos courting Mexican women (in Mexico). Many of his observations would hold true in Costa Rica, as well. He is very matter of fact and to the point. I found him to be quite refreshing.

I too have enjoyed Fred the past couple years, pretty sure he was quite a monger himself-just read into his tales and observations of Thailand, Latin America and his army days.
I always laugh at this one he wrote- "Women exchange sex for whatever they want. Men exchange whatever they have for sex. Call it prostitution, or call it marriage, which is just prostitution with compulsory brand-loyalty." - #310 The Go Go Dancer Who Stole My Viagra

Some of my other favorites-
#315 Playing At Adventure
#245 Fred compares Mexicanas to Gringas
#204 and #150 Fred's thoughts on marriage
#117 Fred compares Asian women to Gringas

Hey,Very interesting .I always like to see the opinons of real people rather then the milk fed bleeding heart liberal media types . When i go to a place that they people seem not to give a shiite I never go back It IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE to me .Ive sat in a restaraunt for 3 hours in mexico waiting for dinner I know what thats like .Here in NJ if you do bad business like that there are literally hundreds of people waiting in line for your business . Ill bag my lunch in CR but not the woman hee hee
