This is a curious story. As I read it, the CR government is siding with whoever gives more aid. hmmmm. I guess money talks at all levels.

Unfortunately here in Costa Rica from the richest man to the middle class man. They dont want to work and feel just fine beginning for money. a couple of weeks ago at a stop light a fairly normal dressed man came over to my car and said he had no money to buy his Ch*ldren milk. Ofcourse as he was stumbling and reeking of alcohol, I couldnt believe he wanted me to pay for his beer tab!! Its obsurd to know that people here have no quams about putting a hand out for nothing! And one this is for certain (in my experience) TICOS do not pay you back, they think it is a gift when they ask to borrow money!!! Pathetic.

It doesnt surprise me. Taiwan pays for a bridge and who knows what else and then they go to bed with the Chinese!!! Its the Tico way!

Yoodoo2.

There is absolutely nothing in your post that I have not seen in the United States. It is not a Tico thing it is a human being thing.

Cant fault them for moving with China, they are a veritable powerhouse now, hell they are the largest block owner of US treasuries, China owns a huge percentage of our US debt, china has been in stealth mode and now the last few years, is breaking out as an economic powerhouse in a big way.
The only disturbing thing is the overt boldness in which oscar says "your not generous enough", like a K*D whining even though you already bought him a playstation, bike and new pokeman collection.

I was just at the United Nations last week and had an interesting conversation with an African tour guide about what he called "dollar" diplomacy.

Basically it boils down to this: China wants to eat Taiwan for lunch just like they did with Hong Kong, Tibet, Macau, to name a few. Taiwan on the other hand, despite being a wealthy nation of like 20 million people; is not a member of the United Nations. They would like to be. In fact, they are desperate to become a member of the UN. So both nations have been playing "dollar" diplomacy by spreading cash around the planet to small nations for support for their respected causes: nationhood for Taiwan, or being taken back by China. Communist China actually views Taiwan as a renegade province.

Can you blame Costa Rica for playing both sides of the fence for some easy money?

I was really surprised to hear that from this 2nd time pres. Taiwan has been very helpful in the past, like the flood 2 years ago CR recieved $ and aid from Taiwan. It was all over TV and the papers then . Hope this abrupt move won't bite CR in it's ass too hard too soon, and that China will act " generous enough".

It's the old story...What have you done for me lately?...

The CR Government is convinced that Beijing will come up with more $$$ than Taiwan. Nothing strange about that all governments buy there way in including Uncle Sam.

Of course CR is convinced China will forward more dinero

I'll make it a bit clearer for you. Given Arias' pro peace background, it's surprising even to a lot of "concerned" ticos that CR would made such abrupt changes towards China, which still has very questionable human rights records, among other things. While desperate Taiwan has been feeding CR well all along.

So what's your point again ?

Sense you like to make things clearer I will be more than happy to shed some light on the subject so your befuddled mind can understand things.

Arias, Noble prize and all, is a politician. Ponder those 3 words for awhile and perhaps enlightenment will come to you :P

The only thing I found strange about a nations's sovereing decision to go another route was the way Arias publicly said that they were cheap. True or not it suprised me. Maybe he had his reasons.

The thread should be modified to 'A Nation of Whores, Beggars and Thieves?'

I don't want to be TOO hard on Don Oscar, but I am reminded of the beggars who get angry when someone gives them less than they want. Why in the world does Taiwan OWE Costa Rica ANYTHING AT ALL? Costa Rica, via Don Oscar, is playing two rivals against each other to extort more from whichever will pay more. And the money? Well, CR did get a nice bridge out of the deal with Taiwan. But I suspect Don Oscar's constituents would prefer cold cash the could siphon off into their own pockets.

Take a look at the Caldera highway or the highway between Quepos and Dominical. In the latter case, I was told the money had already been GIVEN by some other countries (I don't recall which). Has the road been paved? Stupid question. Where did the money go? Trick question.

So if CR is so bad, why do I live here? Because it's no worse than most countries (and it has lots of available chicas, perfect weather, etc.). Oscar Arias and his cronies are certainly no greedier than Dick Cheney. And I don't think Don Oscar would torture me. I hope.
