Here are instructions to create the accents on a PC in Spanish. (Also, to address your concern about the "ñ" with the squiggly line over it - it is called an "en-yay".

To create the accents on your PC, press the "Alt" key on your keyboard and while keeping it pressed, type the combinations of numbers below. The numbers must be typed on the keypad or the letter won't work. The keypad is on the right of your keyboard (NOT above the letters on your keyboard.)

"Alt" + "0225" á
"Alt" + "0233" é
"Alt" + "0237" í
"Alt" + "0243" ó
"Alt" + "0250" ú
"Alt" + "0252" ü
"Alt" + "0241" ñ
"Alt" + "0191" ¿
"Alt" + "0161" ¡

Another way to do it in Word is to Insert Symbol subset Latin-1, and
then copy/paste.

Another way is to customize your language settings in the control panel. Easier than remembering the number combos.

I have done it this since I write a lot of Spanish emails. It's very simple. Here what you do in Windows XP (other versions should be similar):

1. Open the Control Panel (Click start-->settings-->control panel)
2. Double-click on Regional and Language Options
3. In the new window that opens, click on the Languages tab
4. Click on Details
5. Under installed services, click Add and select English (United States)-International keyboard
6. Under default input language, select English (US) English-International keyboard
7. Click ok, ok

This configures your keyboard to accept international letters. It's more work in the beginning but the easy to use.

RightAlt is the Alt key on the right side of the keyboard, to the right of the space bar. The left one will not work.

Now to use:

To type:
á = RightAlt + a
é = RightAlt + e
í = RightAlt + i
ó = RightAlt + o
ñ = RightAlt + n
¢ =RightAlt + Shift + c
Á = RightAlt + Shift + a
É = RightAlt + Shift + e
Í = RightAlt + Shift + i
Ó = RightAlt + Shift + o
Ñ = RightAlt + Shift + n

I just type in spanish and forgo the accents... most hispanics that I know, unless they are doing business, seem to do the same...

with the notable exception of the ñ....


Seeing things w/o access is no big deal, but the ñ is quite essential at times. Besides the fact that most people get the damned accent wrong anyway...

It could be the Vista. I have never used it. I have XP on my desktop and laptop and it works on both.

After you add the US-International keyboard to the list, make sure that that's the one that's activated. If you have more than 1 keyboard type listed, you should be able to select which you want to activate in the "language bar" which may be on the task bar.

Or what I did is delete (remove) the regular US keyboard and just leave the US-International. Everything still works the way it did before PLUS I can type the Spanish characters now.

Adding the United States-International Keyboard Layout

To add the United States-International keyboard layout, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Under Pick a category, click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
3. Under or pick a Control Panel icon, click Regional and Language Options.

The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears.

4. On the Languages tab, click Details.

The Text Services and Input Languages dialog box appears.

5. Under Installed services, click Add.

The Add Input language dialog box appears.

6. In the Input language list, click the language that you want. For example, English (United States).

NOTE: When you use the United States-International keyboard layout, you should also use an English language setting.

7. In the Keyboard layout/IME list, click United States-International, and then click OK.
8. In the Select one of the installed input languages to use when you start your computer list, click Language name - United States-International (where Language name is the language that you selected in step 6), and then click OK.
9. In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK.

*Notice that the Language bar appears on the taskbar. When you position the mouse pointer over it, a ToolTip appears that describes the active keyboard layout. For example, United States-International.
10. Click the Language bar, and then click United States-International on the shortcut menu that appears.

The United States-International keyboard layout is now activated.
