Gents:

i just read the following in Craigslist:

"If you just live with a Costa Rican woman for as little as two years, you have to pay her support for the rest of her life . Costa Rican women know this law, and how to use it to support themselves . If you try to leave the country, police will take you off the plane ."

Is this an urban myth or the truth?

BTW, I have no intention of staying with a women for 2 years and I have even less intention of staying with a women for 2 years in CR.

In Costa Rica, it seems like you don't have to pay shit. So many deadbeat fathers running around, not paying a dime to support their K*ds. I don't see it being any different for women.

While this may be true, I still would not want my name coming up on the computer, when I get off the plane, looking forward to another great weekend in CR. That'd ruin your day! And I'm sure you wouldn't be the first...

So, for all your ex-pats in CR with a live-in chica, just make sure to let her go after 23 months! :shock:

My understanding from a friend who is going through this is it is 3 years. I am good for another 2 years 9 months and 23 days, but whose counting.

There's your escape clause on a technicality. I wouldn't exactly classify a relationship with a Tica as ever being stable.... :lol:

Unfortunately, it is more truth than lie. It takes very little effort on the part of a CR citizen to have you detained. If you "step over the boundaries" of mongering and get her knocked up or marry her, quite frankly, you are P-hucked. Even if you live with her for 2 years it is common law marriage. Never buy anything in CR. Rent the chicas, rent the hotel room etc..etc.. I confirmed monger and CRT VIP can probably tell the story better than I. Maybe he will speak up. He got involved with a psycho Tica and was temporarily detained. It is still and always will be a game of "screw the gringo." We play on their field and they make the rules.

I always thought if you lived with a tica for 2 years it meant you were married but drifter quoted a good source.

If ticos don't pay the Ch*ld support they throw them in san sabastion prison. I know 3 ticas whose exhusbands are there. Of course the ticos must have a job to be expected to pay.

A tica can prevent you from leaving the country for a variety of reasons. Guilty until proven innocent is the law here.

The two year common law is in effect in Colombia also.
I know a guy that is going through it as we speak.

It may vary well be in most of the Latin countries?
I have warned every guy that I think may fall into this.
